What is happening with my periods?

Hi everyone,

I posted in women’s health but there seems to be better traffic here.

I’m 39, 40 in a couple of months. In the last few years my periods have gone from 28 days clockwork to anywhere between 23-30 days, more recently they seem to have settled around 26-27 days.

I have been known to have a couple of days spotting before my period but this month I started with a pinky discharge 8 days ago, it developed into red streaky type discharge for 4 days but only once a day and only noticeable when I wiped. This stopped a couple of days ago, I’m now on day 26 and no sign of my period, although I have been crampy and had PMT type symptoms pretty much since the spotting begun.

Does this all sound peri linked do you think? My mum started with peri symptoms in her late 30’s and had her last period when she was 45.

Yes.

Age of menopause tends to be hereditary,

Don't panic though as you could go like this for years before they stop.

@JinglingSpringbells thank you for replying.

Its been driving me a bit mad, its been over a week now of feeling like my period is going to come but nothing other than bits of spotting, the mood swings have been intense!

My best friend is 50 this year and hasn’t really had any peri symptoms at all so I started to doubt myself!

I had the same . I saw the nurse and they did some screening just in case it was caused by something else. She also said I gave cervical ectropian , and that is more prone to bleeding.

I find it a little bit of a minor inconvenience, as I've mentioned on the menopause board before.

MrsWhites · 30/04/2024 21:08

@Mairzydotes i do have a small ectropian apparently.

It sounds like it’s pretty common to have spotting, will keep an eye on it. As I be said I’ve had it before periods before, it was just that this was earlier than usual. Felt hormonal though with cramps and mood etc.

Thanks for replying!

I have same issue. Mine are all over the place. Went from 45 day cycles to 22 day cycles to 29 day cycles. The joys of perimenopause

MrsWhites · 05/05/2024 07:58

Hi @AlwaysGrateful, sorry you are having the same issue, it’s so annoying isn’t it. My period never came so it would seem that the spotting that I had after 18 days was my period for this month. Hoping the next one isn’t crazy heavy to make up for it!

Yes. Periods were the first sign. Shorter cycles, skipped cycles for up to four months, spotting, heavier bleeding. It started in my forties and became worse gradually. I got the mirena coil when I was forty-eight. No more periods. Delighted.

Hello! I’m 43 but my periods are like this. Vary from 21-27 days.

Ladymuck2022 · 30/06/2024 23:36

Period blood since 2022 I first asked Colchester hospital in early 23 if I was going through menopause with the pinky blood seen - not interested at all.

What is happening with my periods?

I'm 44. My periods used to be regular 28 day cycles. Now it can be anywhere between 14 and 30 days!
So frustrating. Think I'm in (or heading in) peri menopause. Oh joy.

Pregnancy? I had streaking before testing positive.
