estriol cream / estradiol cream - what's the difference?

Have been happily using Ovestin cream for about 6 months, I know it's now available as generic estriol. But I have just had an email about something called Gina which appears to be the same thing, but is estradiol.

What's the difference? One better than the other?

The generic estriol is apparently the same product as Ovestin. I believe the brand name has now been debranded.

Gina is a tablet, the same as vagifem.

Estriol and estradiol are highly similar but do have distinct differences in the body. The first main difference comes in the structure of the hormone. Estriol has three oxygen-hydrogen receptors, and estradiol has two.

Estradiol is more potent and active in the body than estriol. Estriol plays a vital role during pregnancy, and the placenta produces increased amounts; whereas, estradiol primarily comes from the ovaries.

Estriol is the most prominent circulating hormone yet has fewer functions than estradiol. Estradiol can attach to receptors throughout the entire body, while estriol has a few, mainly in the vagina, hair follicles, and skin.

Who's emailed you and why?

Gina is an over the counter version of estradiol (which as PP says is stronger.)
The other brand name on prescription is Vagifem.
It's a small pessary not a cream .

One of those menopause newsletter things - have you heard about Gina blah blah blah. And I'm thinking no, I haven't. I am on Ovestin/Estriol and doing OK with it but interested if there's something different/better which I should know about.

Is the Gina thing still twice a week?
