Peri/menopause - sudden period and heart palpitations

I am 51 and in the last 12 months have stopped having regular periods. I think I have had a couple of very, very light periods but not in recent months. Over the last couple of days I have started to have another light period and some slight heart palpitations. I have had heart palpitations in the past that were investigated and nothing sinister was found. So I am not hugely worried but just hate the feeling. What I get is not a racing heart but that weird feeling like a skipped beat or similar. I assume it’s related to my hormones being all over the place…

has anyone had similar symptoms?

sounds more like ectopic heart beats.

very common and usually nothing, evidently lots of people incl men have these.

NHS website has info.

if you're worried see your GP but they aren't treated unless they are more serious. You'd have an ECG and the gap between the beats and how often they occur would be checked. Some type of meds are prescribed if they are very erratic or very long gaps.

@JinglingSpringbells hi, yes - that’s what they are.

I agree with this. I have the same and was referred to a cardiologist. He monitored me and decided it was nothing to worry about. It can definitely be hormonal. I've found it's worse during or just before my periods.
Also there are certain foods that trigger it. I can't remember all of them but definitely caffeine, cheese and marmite (things I have a lot of!).

Heart palpitations are extremely common in menopause. I now get them, started when I was 51. Nothing to be concerned about according to my gp.

My heart palpitations stopped with HRT

Thank for the reassurance.

I did see a cardiologist when I kept getting it about 8 years ago.

@SallyWD that is interesting because for me having slight acid reflux from certain foods can also be a trigger.

Palpitations and ectopic beats are slightly different.

Palpitations are a racing heart for a short period of time. Like a fluttering.

Ectopics are missed beats or a quick beat after a missed one. More irregular than 'fluttering'.

It's true that stimulants like caffeine can provoke this in men as well as women.
