Testovan gel - how much??

I’ve just been prescribed Testovan gel by my GP. I was hoping for one of the more recognised brands where the dose is clearer, but as it is I’m questioning her dosage instructions.

It’s a pump dispenser, with one pump being 23g of testosterone.

The starting dose for men is one pump a day, and I’ve been told to use half a pump every other day. I guess this would be 11.5mg, so averaging out at just over 5mg a day.

Does anyone else use this gel? It seems like a lot!

Hi @Namddf
I’ve been prescribed Testavan for about 7 months now and I felt the dosage was dodgy at the beginning too.
I have one pump on a Mon, Wed and Fri.
I think it is about right?!?! Libido returned, feeling a bit more energised and not as weak.
The GP hasn’t asked for a testosterone blood test to check my levels yet and I haven’t pushed for it because I’m scared they’ll take it off me.
On the other hand, a blood test might show I’m not having enough - I haven’t become extra hairy and I would love to increase it slightly as I’ve definitely felt a benefit.

Oh wow, thank you @wid thats really helpful.

So you have three whole pumps a week? The dose she’s suggesting for now is half a pump every other day, so 2 pumps a week. It just seems a lot compared to the male dose, when I thought it would be a lot less.

Good to know you’ve had no horrible side effects in 7 months!

Maybe I’ll just continue with this and see how I feel.

Feeling weak and tired with anxiety and brain fog is my problem too. I’m really hoping it will help as I’ve tried everything else. I just want to feel like me again.

It’s definitely helped me, especially with brain fog but my dose does seem to be a lot more than you so I really need to get a blood test.
Because testosterone is prescribed off-label for women, I’ve noticed that the GP and pharmacist struggle with figuring out the correct dosage.

Should also have said that I only ended up with Testavan because it was the only testosterone gel available in any of my local pharmacies. The GP originally prescribed Tostran.

jeaux90 · 07/04/2024 21:17

I have one pump every other day.

The starting dose for women is 5mg/day. There’s a few references available online. The Australian product for women, Androfemme, is 5mg/day. It’s available privately in the UK and is imported. You can buy via an onine consult.

I use Tostran which is 10mg/pump so it’s quite easy to dose every second day.

When it was out of stock I used Testogel pump which I really found difficult to dose as each pump was 4 days worth.

PortiaWithNoBreaks · 07/04/2024 21:45

@Namddf your GP’s dosage sounds spot on.

Namddf · 07/04/2024 22:31

@PortiaWithNoBreaks Thanks, that’s really helpful.
It’s early days so I’ll see if it helps. Good to know that I can always go up a bit as well.

You have more than me. I have one pump on a Mon, Wed & Fri. Have you had your testosterone level checked since starting Testavan?

jeaux90 · 08/04/2024 08:08

@Wid yes is where it should be now, it was rock bottom. The difference it's made is amazing. I thought my career was over 18 months ago.

Namddf · 09/04/2024 10:23

@jeaux90 Thats so good to hear. The brain fog is awful and I am struggling so much with motivation and concentration at work. I just want to give up.

That’s despite being on 4 pumps of oestrogel, so I’m hoping this is the missing piece of the jigsaw.

OP it definitely was for me, helped enormously with brain fog, anxiety but the other great side effect was my joints and fingers. They would be so incredibly stiff in the mornings, fine now.
