Your final period - was it like spotting?

I'm 49, had unpredictable periods for last few years, longest gap between was 61 days but usually around 24 days, sometimes shorter. Usually the periods themselves have been normal length, occasionally they've carried on spotting afterwards for a while until finally petering out. I'm expecting (and hoping!) they'll stop soon. This month seems weird - a bit of brown discharge, then nothing for a couple of days, then a bit of pink spotting so I thought period had arrived, it's now gone back to nothing. I thought it was maybe spotting between periods, but I'm wondering if there's any chance that this is my last period and there's nothing else left to come out! Can you tell me in your experience is that something that can happen please?!

The last few were awful, very heavy and a bit traumatic if I'm being honest. The last one was v light and only lasted a day and a half.

Op you don’t need to worry about irregular bleeding until after a year with no period. I mean post meno bleeding needs to be checked out.

aSpanielintheworks · 04/04/2024 20:38

Nope. Mine were so heavy, and increasingly closer together. My last one lasted three weeks and I had to go to the gp to get a drug to stop it. It was 8 months before I had a period after that, then one random one, and nothing since.

In the last few years, they became irregular and heavier than normal. Then nothing for a few months.my very last one was literally just a smear of blood.

Rainbow212 · 04/04/2024 20:41

I was almost 49.

dudsville · 04/04/2024 20:42

My last one, a year ago, was off and on for 3 or 4 weeks, sometimes normal light flow, sometimes spotting, not heavy.

Roryhon · 04/04/2024 20:45

The last one came out of nowhere, after six months of nothing, and was the bloodbath of bloodbaths (I’d had quite a few hideous ones in the last couple of years prior). I was staying at someone’s house who had no bin in the bathroom and we went to a concert- I flooded a tampon every hour. Thankfully nothing since and it’s been well over a year.

Mine was a normal period. Was every seven months for s few years.

MoonWoman69 · 04/04/2024 20:46

My "last" one, a good few years ago now, was normal for me, I always had quite heavy periods, which lasted around 5 days. Then I had nothing for well over a year. Then all of a sudden, I came on and it was 3 times as bad as usual and lasted a full seven days! I swear I thought it would never stop! And that was it, all done forever! (Having said that, I can't not have some tampons lurking around, just in case, but I haven't needed them for the last 3 years or so!)

Mine went haywire at 38.
Still going sporadically at 48, the unpredictability has been a proper nuisance.

When I googled it, years ago, I found an article that said if the mean average cycle length of your last 10 periods was 42 days or more, then you were “most likely” in your last year of menstruating…who knows!

Supersoakers · 05/04/2024 08:12

The not knowing is really confusing. I’m 48 and my cycles had got shorter and lighter until this last one which was 46 days. Slightly heavier at first but not really. Really want to know if there’s a pattern! Also worried about the bloodbath that so many talk about- at work there are women 40-50+ who have all experienced this!

This is interesting, thank you. I’ve just worked mine out and I’m at 73 so hopefully almost there! Not had a period since July last year - I had 3 last year in a row that were fairly normal but nothing in the 6 months before that.
Am hoping I can get through the next 3 months and then I am ‘official’ - I’m 47 so perhaps on the younger (ish) side of average but I’d be delighted for them to be gone. Not had any real issues at all which is good, long may it continue.

I missed one period aged 45. I was on holiday and put it down to change/ stress. Between 45 and 50 I’d miss the odd one . Then from 50-51 there would be a 2 month gap then 2 months normal. Then aged 51 they just stopped.
