Awful pain after Mirena & Hystereoscopy - what’s normal for settling in period?

Hi

had Mirena fitted during Hystereoscopy last week and polyp removal.

it’s been 8 days and I’ve got no signs of infection or bleeding, but have constant, horrendous cramps which don’t seem to respond to painkillers.

anyone had similar during the “settling in” period and how long did it last please? Trying to work out what’s normal!

thanks

No cramps after Mirena fitting or hysteroscopy with sample removal.

No cramps after Mirena fitting or hysteroscopy with sample removal.

Similar.
Mild discomfort (not requiring pain relief) for a couple of hours.

I've had differing experiences. Usually the mirena cramps last a week or so for me. But I have always had absolutely horrific periods so I'm fine with cramps.

And yes, the paracetemol doesn't help much with them.

Maybe go back to the consultant who fitted it (contact them) and ask?

Sometimes, coils move and it may have slipped out of place.

The first time I had a Mirena I had such bad cramping I had it removed. I had it again later in life and it's been fine this time. I'd get them to check it's in properly

Mine took 4 weeks to settle down during that time they sent me fo a scan as it was so painful and they did offer to take it out if I wanted.

After my hysteroscopy and polyps removal I'd say it was a good 2 weeks before the pain settled and had bleeding for a good week. Ponstan was prescribed for the pain and I did find that helped a good bit. Having the mirena fitted next month so will see how that goes 🙈

LambriniBobinIsleworth · 16/02/2024 20:47

After my first mirena was fitted I had about five days of early-labour like cramps that no painkillers touched.

vipersnest1 · 16/02/2024 21:07

I had pain every day after having a Mirena fitted - apparently it can cause irritation to the gut in people that are prone to it. I had it removed after five months as I could t take any more.

Whatapickle78 · 17/02/2024 14:55

Thanks everyone… I feel like there is enough evidence from here that it could be the Mirena causing these issues, and maybe a couple of weeks of pain not massively unusual?!

I am though def going to try to speak to the Gyn team next week to check how much is too much pain… as this doesn’t feel like “settling in” twingey pain - it’s completely constant and the whole of the pelvic area. Like it’s inflamed 🙁

Yes definitely get it checked as with both procedures there is always a risk. The pain I felt with both was a dull period like pain.

Good luck with the Mirena fitting!

I feel like if it eventually works (no more painful polyps or thickened lining) it will all be worth it.

useful to hear that polyp removal alone can cause 2 weeks of pain (though I’m sorry you went through this!)

thanks for a sharing and hope Mirena works for you

I will def ask them to check it’s in properly, I had a feel yesterday and can only feel 1 thread, not two. Unless 1 thread is what they mean by ‘the threads?’

Have you been swabbed for infection?

I've been bleeding for 6 weeks since my Mirena was fitted. Plus crampy pain and low mood. It's being removed next week and I can't wait!

3kidsaremorethanenough · 14/03/2024 21:31

Hi OP how are you feeling now? Has it settled down any?

I'm booked in for next month to have mine put in, dreading it

Chrisg79 · 15/03/2024 02:11

I had the same procedure. I had bad cramps for 48 hours and then like bad period pain for several weeks. I took naproxen and paracetamol when it was bad. Hope it settles quickly.

Whatapickle78 · 15/03/2024 16:10

I had 2.5 weeks of pain, but I think actually it was probably more related to the polyps being removed, than the actual Mirena insertion. I was really surprised by how bad it was! Completely gone now, and feeling good on the Mirena so far too (all fingers crossed).

Good luck with yours and I hope it helps!

Hysteroscopy and polyp removal and I was two weeks of pain and bloated discomfort and it really fucked me. I doubt it's the mirena. Youvr just had an invasive procedure
