Bleeding after 4 years of Mirena & HRT

ArticSaviour · 15/02/2024 08:41

I am annoyed. I seem to be having a (light) period. I have had a Mirena for four years and been using Estrogel for two years. Nothing. Not a thing. So much so that I packed all the period products away.

Monday I started bleeding. I had to raid the stash for students at school. It is very light but still happening. Why?

Anyone else experienced this?

Any unusual bleeding needs seeing by the GP.
Have you checked for the strings?

BatshitCrazyWoman · 15/02/2024 15:04

I was told that if you are using the Mirena as part of your HRT, it needs to be replaced after 4 years. So maybe you need a new one?

I also have started light bleeding on a mirena following years of no periods with them. Went back to the doctor who inerted it and was informed that often fluctuating hormone levels in perimenopause can trigger the restarting of periods due to overall hormone imbalances.
I agree with pp that it should be checked by a doctor, however I wouldn't be unduly concerned as it seems not to be too uncommon a perimenopause symptom ( just really annoying!!).

I had a fibroid grow around the mirena coil which caused bleeding. I would go see your GP as if the lining is thickening and bleeding you need a scan to find out why. I ended up with a hystoscope to confirm after an ultrasound. Then treatment.

Any bleeding like this needs to be checked on.

Droolylabradors · 15/02/2024 15:18

Sounds like the mirena needs changing and you don't have sufficient progesterone.

That said my private GP who fitted my mirena a few weeks ago said they are looking at extending the mirena licence to 6-8yrs for HRT.

But right now it's 4yrs.

NotEvenSlightlyReasonable · 15/02/2024 15:30

Me too! I've had it checked, been scanned (all clear and Mirena still in place), checked for STDs (unsurprisingly clear) but was taken off HRT except for the mirena for 6 weeks. Hoping to get it reinstated soon. Once off the HRT I had a 10 day very light period.

My conclusion is that my hormones have gone lala. Not really news, hints have been dropped for some time.

DustyLee123 · 15/02/2024 16:44

I was told mine was in for 5 years

ArticSaviour · 15/02/2024 21:06

I need to get it checked. I have never been able to feel the strings because I am a big fat inflexible bastard but my HRT review in October said the coil should be OK.

I did an online consultation. Yes, I need to see a doctor. Except the next bookable appointment is not for 4 weeks, and I missed the chance to ring this morning for an 'emergency' appt. In a meeting tomorrow am so no chance to ring then either. Stupid bastard system
