Peri-menopause mood changes - sertraline

I had a phone consultation with a nurse this morning to discuss my situation.

im 45 and just over a year ago I had a kyleena coil fitted. This is the first time I’ve ever had success with any hormonal contraception. I tried the pill and injection about 25 years ago, well before kids, and it sent me a bit loopy and wild and my body went all over the place. (I bled for about 2 years!)

last year after 10 years of having the copper coil, I couldn’t be done with heavy periods and now have a kyleena and it’s been brilliant regards to that!

However, over the last 6 months my cycles have shortened a bit and I’ve been having some really awful moods. I don’t know if this is related to the coil or if it’s related to perimenopause, so I wanted to discuss it with the nurse.

She has suggested sertraline. I’ve been on this in the past as I have had depression and I felt it served its purpose. I absolutely don’t feel these moods are anything like they were before, although I am anxious, have crippling low confidence and get fizzing rage and find myself feeling more upset it’s totally different to when I really had such a dark cloud hanging over me which is why I think it may be hormonal because some of the feelings alleviate.

I just don’t know what do do for the best. I can’t get a blood test done because of the kyleena, but I absolutely do not feel like myself.

What other alternatives are there available that could help me with these symptoms? Do many people take the sertraline? When I as on it before it gave me terrible night sweats which is ironic considering I’m possibly going to take them for these peri symptoms!

HRT.
Moods better, anxiety a lot better and more like my old self.

Agree with HRT patches.

The nurse told me that I can’t have HRT due to the kyleena though!

Of course you can! Get them to take the kyleena out and swap it for a mirena (I couldn't cope with any other birth control either, mirena is fine).

Then add oestrogen.

I would go and see a GP who knows a bit more.

I would go for oestrogen over anti depressants.
