I'm 51 and perimenopausal. I had blood tests, an ultrasound and hysteroscopy in April 2023 for an 8 week heavy period. A small fibroid was found, but was not thought to be causing the prolonged bleeding. Put down to hormones! Period finally stopped with the help of Tranexamic Acid tablets.

I'm now on week 3 of a heavy period, and can see it going the same way. However, Tranexamic Acid tablets are not helping this cycle. I'm unable to take HRT due to family history of breast cancer (mother and her aunt). I'm also mildly asthmatic.

There's no end in sight to this period! Any suggestions of medication I could try to stop this prolonged bleeding would be much appreciated please.

Ibuprofen reduces menstrual bleeding significantly by slowing down prostaglandin production- obviously this can be hard on your stomach so make sure not to have on empty stomach

I had the coil fitted and twice it came out due to the fibroids position. I had the fibroids removed whilst under anaesthetic I had my 3rd coil fitted. I had been bleeding for constantly for 9 months sometimes extremely heavy so had to take a high dosage of tranexamic acid which sometimes helped.
I was told by the gynaecologist I should never had the coil fitted as the fibroids were a problem. Once I had them removed and coil fitted the bleeding stopped immediately. Occasionally get some light bleeding.

Mefanemic acid was more effective than trans acid for me with heavy bleeding - GP can prescribe. Good luck it sounds awful

hmm, i had a coil fitted to supposedly help with heavy bleeding caused by fibroids. It had the opposite effect and made me bleed longer and heavier so not sure I'd recommend!

Melatonin
And green tea extract to reduce the fibroid.
