Very long period - anyone else?

I've been bleeding now for 23 days. I'm 50 - and bleeding has been quite irregular now for a couple of years. I was checked out (colposcopy and scan) for mid cycle spotting both in 2020 and 2022. I've spoken to GP and have appointment later in week. I'm sure it's hormonal as I skipped a period last month. I wondered if other perimenopasusal women have had very long bleeds like this - it's relatively light but more than spotting. No clots or flooding or pain. Just annoying!

Also, I'm not taking any hrt or anything else. I do have a copper coil but had it for years before this all started.

I had this to the point where I was anaemic . I was put on the mini pill to stop my periods, which seems to be helping.

I’m experiencing this at the moment. Four years ago I started spotting mid cycle. Two years ago I had hysteroscopy and internal scan and nothing was found. Then following that my periods are very irregular and my last two were 41 and 37 day cycles. This was then followed by spotting and then bleeding for longer. I had a week off and then came on again and it lasted for 10 days. It seems to have stopped now. I phoned the dr and she said this can be common but to monitor til after Xmas. It’s just such a nuisance isn’t it and your mind goes crazy worrying.

Thanks for replies. Its reassuring to read someone else has this but yes, it's worrying and gets me down. The bleeding is showing no signs of stopping and nearly hitting 4 weeks now. I'm kind of hoping GP normalises it a bit rather than sending me straight back for scans. After years of pregnancies and miscarriages I simply cannot stand the thought of the invasive tests anymore.... I wondered if she will offer me norethisterone or tranixamic acid or something to make it go away!!

It could just be that because of missed periods the lining has got very thick and is taking time to shed. I know what you mean about being sick of invasive tests.

have you downloaded the Balance app? It’s been created by a menopause specialist that lives near me - dr Louise newson - and lots of women use. Lots of experiences and stories from other women on the community tab.

@Marmiteymuffin If it's just a year since you scan you are probably okay.

The treatment options are

1 The Mirena coil
2 HRT (which should regulate your bleed to an HRT cycle - like the Pill does.)
3 Tranexamic acid will reduce the flow but won't necessarily shorten a cycle.
4 The mini pill which can reduce bleeding as it's usually lack of progesterone that causes the lining not to shed.

As PP says, you're losing the equivalent of 2 months of lining.

Get your GP to test your for anaemia and prescribe iron if necessary.

I think I am on month three of pretty much every day bleeding. Mostly light but with occasional floods and clots. Mine is fibroids and polyps and I finally have my hysterectomy operation date woohoo so hopefully this has an end in sight.
I hope you get some answers and a solution @Marmiteymuffin as it it mighty tiring bleeding all the time.

Im 53 & ’ve just got a heavy period after 5 months of no period. The last 2 periods were light. Doctor has booked me for an ultrasound scan & blood test. I’ve been perimenopause for 6 years. Has anyone else experienced random heavy periods after a long pause between cycles??

Teentrauma · 01/12/2023 08:36

I've just had a period that lasted more than 4 weeks. Mostly light and the last week or so was little more than light spotting, but still blood everyday. My cycles had started lengthening out but last few months have got closer together again, so annoying as I was so sure the end was in sight! I also have fibroids that I've had 3 lots of surgery for over the last 10 years. GP not concerned but sending me for ultrasound, mainly to check the status of my fibroids as the buggers keep growing back!

That's completely normal. The blood is the 5 months worth that's coming away.

Rubyxxxx · 01/12/2023 10:30

Thanks for help!! It’s just so worrying. Then I’ve googled & read horror stories on internet of other things it could be which hasn’t helped.

Marmiteymuffin · 01/12/2023 13:09

It's helpful reading others experience. It's my 3rd time to see the GP - it always surprises me that they don't dismiss it immediately as hormones. She's referred me back for another scan - mainly because she couldn't assess my cervix properly due to the bleeding and also so i can get out the copper coil and probably get the mirena coil. She also offered transexamic acid and a blood test. She was reassuring though that this is most likely hormones. I don't feel too worried about other causes but I suppose it's better to have peace of mind when putting up with the constant bleeding / anxious mood swings!

Yes! I missed my period altogether last month then it came on out of the blue and was horrendous! Flooding, clots and cramps. I'm 51. I have to work like this. I have aching all over and look like a ghost I'm so pale.
I have tried all sorts of HRT and nothing works. Is it worth getting a coil fitted? When will the periods stop altogether?
Thanks x
