Bright red face, coolish body, is this a hot flush

Hi

twice in the last week I’ve had an instance where I’ve done something that’s made me wonder…….

last week drank a really small glass of wine with dinner (100ml) and suddenly my face was like a furnace, bright red face. No one else in the house was too hot. But my body didn’t feel overly hot. I was also really snappy with kids that day.

then just now I dried my hair with the hair dryer for 20 mins and my face was a beetroot after. I normally get a little warm after but nothing like this.

my face stayed red for about an couple hours last time and currently now it’s still red and it’s been a good 30 mins and still feels super warm.

is this a hot flush?

im only 40 but my mum said her periods stopped at 40.

I don’t know what my cycle is like as I had the hormone coil fitted in July. They were regularish before that. But then I had a baby 18 months ago and they never got back to a completely regular pattern.

thanks a lot if anyone can advise.

Oh and also, just wondering too, when can one go and get oestrogen patches/gel? I’m def gonna try hrt when time comes. Lots of podcasts I’ve listened to say it’s in the perimenopause when you need it. But does this mean I need it now? Or do I need to have more symptoms/be surer, before I get some? Thanks

My hot flushes were characterised by a feeling of heat in my chest and sweating, with a racing heart and then feeling quite cool straight after, it was also mainly at night.

You can get HRT prescribed by your GP.

GP will prescribe HRT based on symptoms. They don't do hormone tests routinely any more (some people may have had hormone tests but it varies by practice these days).

Look up menopause symptoms and see what you're experiencing. There's a huge range, it's not just periods changing and hot flushes.

What you describe sounds like a normal response to alcohol or the hairdryer, tbh. Hot flushes usually cause sudden sweating and high body heat rather than just a hot red face.

But yes, when the time comes, if you can take HRT it can help massively with all symptoms. You might need to try a few sorts before you land on the one that suits you - patches, gels, sprays are all available for oestrogen, and progesterone is also needed if you still have a womb and can be included in the patch or taken separately as tablet.

I get the red face thing when drinking some types of alcohol too - usually wine. I think it's something to do with sulphates.

In my experience a hot flush is different and passes quickly.

You are developing rosacea.

Ok thanks both.

I’m having other symptoms too, for past three months: random heartburn when never suffered before, my skin itches in places (like a mother, has woken me up past two nights with it), I get random nausea a bit like morning sickness, rage, and my sleep is awful. I am in bed for 9 hours some nights and I don’t remember being really awake but I haven’t slept well, just knackered in the morning. bad dreams too.

I’m already on the Miranda coil so maybe the progesterone is masking it a bit….

im recording it on the balance app so I guess I’ll give it another couple of weeks and then see the gp if it doesn’t improve.
