HRT advice?

Hi, I have been given oestrogen gel and progesterone tablets for perimenopausal symptoms. I was told to start the gel on the first day of my next period and then start the tablets 15 days after? Seems simple but yesterday I started bleeding heavenly mid cycle, this happens often and then I still go on to have a normal period a week or 2 after. This time the bleeding pretty heavy flooding and clots (sorry tmi) and I’m wondering if I should start the gel now or wait for when my period is actually due as I’m not sure if this is a period or just random bleeding 😬?

I am hoping HRT will settle my periods down or help with the break through bleeding/random bleeding. I am on the list for hysterectomy but because of my age they want to leave my ovaries in (I don’t agree with this) so I go through menopause naturally, I am 41 and have been having heavy periods for years but other perimenopausal symptoms for the last 6+ months. Has anyone found HRT settles down the heavy bleeding or made it worse?

Have they investigated the heavy bleeding? Similar age but I had scans, blood tests and was then offered Tranexamic Acid rather than HRT. That has reduced flooding and clots and made it manageable.

Sorry cannot help, but there is a group called Menopause Matters where you join, which has a forum to post questions there and you will get an answer.

Yes, loads of investigation over the past 5 years, have had an ablation which didn’t work, scans have showed nothing, they want to do another hysteroscopy to see if there’s anything suspicious but last time it showed nothing. They have said after the hysteroscopy I can go on the waiting list for hysterectomy. I have had Tranexamic acid but it made little difference 🙁.

I was told it doesn't matter what day you start. I started mid month. And then fifteen days later took the utrogestan. Eventually it creates a new cycle. You don't follow your own cycle you create one.

Thank you. I decided to start the gel yesterday as I was still bleeding. I will start the tablets in 15 days.

I am similar with contraceptive hormones, had no luck with the combined pill so I am unsure how taking the same hormones will effect me, my gp did say that because they are a different dose they might not create the same side effects as contraceptives.

It takes a while but you will sort out a cycle of sorts. So take progesterone on day 14 as instructed and then just keep with that. If your "real" period starts a few days earlier or later then call that day 1. But if it's more than 2 days then stick with your schedule.

@Jsiegel you can’t have oestrogen only HRT if you have a uterus. You need progesterone too for endometrial protection.

@Lovemusic82 doesn’t really matter when you start it. As long as you use the progesterone cyclically you’ll develop a bleed cycle.
