Mirena and tampons

Can you use tampons with a Mirena? My doc said no - just pads. This constant low level bleeding is driving me crazy, causing washing, stopping swimming and the coil means my mooncup is now a no-go.

What can we use?

Why can't you use tampons or a mooncup with a coil? I have a coil and use both.

SleepWhenAmDead · 29/10/2023 09:08

Also use tampons with mirena. No problems. Nobody said not to.

Sprogonthetyne · 29/10/2023 09:16

I was told not to for the first 5 days after fitting, but after that it's fine.

I was told it risks pulling it out. The mooncup website says not to as the suction can dislodge it. Tampons was just what the doctor/gynae said. I was really pissed of because no-one mentioned it in the run up to fitting it and it meant completely rethinking my sanpro.

Don’t know but sympathy on the low level bleeding. The Mirena made me bleed every day for three months before I insisted they take it out. Best contraception ever as I didn’t have sex the entire time :(

If it isn’t what you expected don’t be afraid to ask for it to come out.

Why cant you use period pants? I had a mirena fitted in June and wore period pants for a few months afterwards.

BoohooWoohoo · 29/10/2023 10:35

Yes you can but not for a few days immediately after Mirena insertion

I do but I've only got 5 pairs and I lije swimming. The bleeding is pretty constant. Just spotting for a couple of weeks then light bleeding then a few medium days. It's been like this since March and everyone just says wait for it to settle. It's a pain but better than the flooding 😱

I swam with the mirena bleeding. It was never gushing at any point and so I was more a medium to light spot/flow. I never had any in my swim suit. It didn't feel like a period.

I also have five pairs period pants. I wore a pair all day at work and then not in bed as I didn't bleed lying down so just cotton pants in bed.

I also just shove them in the wash and dry, no rinsing in cold water etc.

I also used tampons and mooncup with mirena with no issues. I had irritating spotting for a while but now basically have no periods at all which is great.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 29/10/2023 11:13

I don't get bleeding any more really but I do have PMT which sucks, I'd hoped that would disappear too!

Luddite26 · 29/10/2023 11:16

I have massive sympathy .
Had the mirena fitted in 1997 bled every day for months and months and then ended up in hospital with an ectopic pregnancy. I was so shocked. A female registrar told me she didn't believe in abortion when I said I can't have another baby (had 3 kids). Then a lovely old Irish gynae came along and said get this bloody coil out I'm sick of them wrecking women's lives.
Had to have tube removed that egg was in.
But I'm 51 now and on 2 pills a day to stop the incessant bleeding.

If it's not suiting you maybe you should have it took out. I acknowledge it's great for some women but when it's horrid it's awful.
I rolled old t-shirt rags up and wash them with my towels/pants can't keep up with other products. Sounds awful but the bleached fibres irritate me.

Crikeyalmighty · 29/10/2023 11:17

Blimey- I never had a single period or bleeding after I had mirena at 36 -

Luddite26 · 29/10/2023 11:37

I have heard loads of positive experiences of Mirena. But the word just fills me with doom!

Aparecium · 29/10/2023 12:14

After a while the threads coil up near your cervix. Nowhere near where a tampon or mooncup sits. Can you feel the threads for yourself? If not, or if you have to really reach deep to feel them, then you should be able to use internal sanpro without any issues.

I don't recall when I started using my mooncup, but I certainly used it with a Mirena in situ. But not for very long. The minimal bleeding settled down within a few months and I never had a proper period again.

How long did it take for the spotting to stop? I've had spotting/light bleeding almost every day since my Mirena was put in 3.5 months ago
