Blood clot on hrt

Missy2007 · 20/10/2023 21:17

I have been on hrt for 7 weeks, I haven’t had a period for over a year so take both daily. This evening I have had brown discharge and a blood clot. I have phoned 111 as I want to stop taking the hrt now as I’m worried because of the blood clot, they are phoning me back within 12 hours which will be 8ish tomorrow morning. My question is because I’ve only been on it for 7 weeks can I just stop it, I’m only asking now as due to take it tonight and don’t know whether to.

Hrt can play with your hormones and sometimes cause a bleed. I wouldn't stop it as your body is adjusting and breakthrough bleeding is normal. If you want to stop right away you can, but you may experience a sudden onset of low oestrogen symptoms ect. It takes oestrogen several days to come out of your system anyway

Thank you so much for coming back to me you have put my mind at rest. I will continue with the hrt I was worried as I’d had the blood clot.

7 weeks isn't long to be on HRT and your body is still getting used to it.
See what is said tomorrow but in the meantime keep taking it unless you're advised to stop.
I've been taking HRT for 7 years and occasionally I have small clots but no other adverse symptoms.

JinglingSpringbells · 21/10/2023 14:53

You don't have a blood clot as such @Missy2007

Blood clots are Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) - a life threatening condition.

You're having a period with clots.

Your GP should have explained that bleeding on combined continuous HRT is normal for 6 months while your body adjusts.

Don’t worry about that sort of clot unless you get irregular or persistent bleeding.

It is not the same as a DVT.

My hrt regime took a lot of tweaking before I stopped bleeding, and I was passing humungous clots.
