I smell like warm, slightly off meat. Anyone else?

So yeah, it's as indelicate as the title suggests. The past year or so, along with a myriad of other peri symptoms, if I get sweaty overnight (not bed sweats) my pits smell...meaty. It's a really peculiar aroma & I don't bloody like it.

So not whole body, just the pits.

Anyone else get a scent downgrade in their mid-40's?

I have noticed a change in my body odour too - also not for the better! Which is a slight worry as my sense of smell post COVID has never quite recovered. It did improve slightly with hrt but I am mindful of showering and changing clothes etc..

FatherJoseFernandez · 13/10/2023 18:22

I feel your pain! When I was having night sweats I would wake up smelling like vinegar! They stopped when I started taking black cohosh thankfully. I just make sure my personal hygiene is excellent

BloodyHellKen · 13/10/2023 18:57

Just a thought, could it be a change in your sense of smell, rather than a change in what you actually smell like.

I've noticed that as I've got older and gone through meno I no longer like the smell of perfumes that much. I'm not repulsed by them, rather I'm just not that into perfume anymore, even my favourites I've worn for decades. I just find them a bit synthetic.

I still love the natural smell of flowers, cut grass etc though.

I'm not trying to imply that you've always smelt of meat btw!!

Portakalkedi · 13/10/2023 19:00

Thankfully I missed out on night sweats and hot flushes, but yes a definite change in body odour, hormonal I guess, and needs a more rigorous deodorant routine.

Almosthumannow · 13/10/2023 19:01

I’ve had this too…for a bit I had really smelly armpits before my period…

that seems to have stopped along with my periods.

I wondered why that happens?!

LittleMy77 · 13/10/2023 19:22

Yes! It’s worse when i exercise, and i’m rigorous about hygiene

just sort of oozes the smell from
the pores😬

Haha no the meat scent is definitely new. I've got a really sensitive sense of smell (after covid I was terrified it wouldn't come back cos I'm a chef & I need it!) it drives DH mad. Does me too, sometimes, living in a house with 3 males & just one toilet 😭

Funny you should say that, I'm actually due on. So many odd things happen before my periods now I had thought if this was linked

Are...are we actually just rotting? Slowly putrefying?

My body odour deffo changed after menopause… it was pretty repulsive tbh.. 🤢🤢🤢 but HRT set it back to my usual which is considerably better 😬 I use soap bars now too rather than shower gel. It’s much better at getting rid of stinky bacteria 😝

Smidge001 · 13/10/2023 20:08

I've definitely noticed a change in my snell too. But not meaty. For me it's a warm and sweet smell. It's weird. But definitely sweet.

Basically, yes.

Mumaway · 13/10/2023 20:11

I had a recent smelly time, and at the end developed bacterial vaginosis. Had antibiotics for that, and the weird smell went away too.

Guess I must have some change in bacteria that made me smell awful. Perhaps some probiotics and sanex body wash together with plenty of fermented foods/live yoghurt might reset your flora??

scienceteach · 13/10/2023 20:14

Just hit peri in the last year and after being someone who barely needed to bother with deodorant and could skip a shower without issue, started to feel really smelly. Another thread on here sorted me out. Dettol bar soap plus Sure maximum protection stick deodorant. And talc. Which makes me feel like my granny but does help.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 13/10/2023 20:21

Bar soap not shower gel

Sure Maximum Protection cream

Bio washing detergent for your clothes

No wonder they call it The Change 🙄

toomanyboxes · 13/10/2023 20:24

Erm... if anyone does notice a change in bodily smell, then please ask your GP to do blood tests to check for the possibility of diabetes. A strange smell can be one of the most common first signs.

Kittensat36 · 13/10/2023 20:38

Yes. I smell like a meat pie. Not unpleasant though.

According to one woman who talks about the menopause on YouTube (so maybe take it with a pinch of salt) our body chemistry changes and our sweat gets fattier (apparently) and the bacteria loves it.

The meatpieosis seems to be worst when I am not having flushes.

Yep I had a colleague with this. I worked closely with her and used to go in to her office and open the windows so that others didn't smell it and gossip. I have a strong sense of smell to be fair but I was very conscious of her senior status in the company that I didn't want undermined as I was her deputy (and also a similar age but didn't, to my knowledge, have this smell.) I had lots of sweating but I don't think I changed smell...

BuddhaAtSea · 13/10/2023 20:50

Yes. Decay.
Like others, soap bars, can’t skip the 2 showers a day, cotton fibre clothes.
I can’t smell my perfume, but I stopped smelling it years ago.

Caerulea · 13/10/2023 21:29

Well thank you everyone! Nice to know that in one way or another we are all discovering a funky new side to our musk. Isn't that lovely.

Yay us!

You read my mind (or smelt my armpits) but I have exactly the same recently- meatpieosis- beefypits 🤮
Mitchum is no longer keeping it at bay so need a switch.
Can't wear anything more than once.
It's revolting.

ChevyCamaro · 14/10/2023 10:53

Jesus, no
It's not " decay" and no, we are not " slowly "rotting". 🙄
Its hormonal changes and bacterial changes and also stress creates a worse smelling sweat. The absolute worst thing you can do is use those super strong anti perspirents- they will seem to work in the short term but make it worse in the long run.
I had just one really stinky armpit weirdly. I don't ever use deodorant, but I started to, and , yep, worse.
So, I switched to nice bar soaps, and focused on gut health with the aim of balancing my bacteria. I also increased excercise and took up yoga.
I rarely get stinky pit now.

Plasmodesmata · 14/10/2023 10:54

Would just also like to mention here, I thought I was getting smellier recently but thanks to another thread on here, it turns out Dove deodorant have changed their formula and it doesn't work like it used to. Worth a try if anyone uses that.

DustyLee123 · 14/10/2023 10:55

Yep. I use liquid talc under and between my boobs in summer. Wash with proper soap, not Dove, and get a man’s deodrant.
