Anemia

I have an appt next week to discuss HRT. My Dr asked me to get bloods done to rule out other reasons for my symptoms, rather than to diagnose peri menopause.

I'm 49. I have a list of about 12 symptoms which come and go. Tiredness is one of them. I have only recently started to put 2 and 2 together and think menopause, rather than just a lot of irritating quite minor symptoms but which make me feel a bit run down and about 15-20 years older than I am. Now I've started to look into it, it makes so much sense and I am hopeful HRT will help.

My bloods came back as being slightly anaemic, so I had a further blood test today to check iron, B12 and folic acid levels.

I'm hoping my appt won't be taken over by anaemia discussions , and we can talk about the HRT as well. Luckily I have a double appointment booked.

Just wondering if anyone else has had anaemia with the perimenopause, or it is likely to be an unrelated issue?

I have had pretty much the same experience. I approached my GP about potentially starting HRT, she suggested blood tests. They have come back and I have low B12 and Vit D. I have already started Vit D supplements and have had further tests to check for B12 deficiency. I am awaiting those results before a telephone consultation with the GP. I’d quite like answers so I can start treatment for whatever is wrong with me!

My additional blood tests came back with an iron deficiency. The B12 and Folic Acid levels were fine. I think I've deduced that my anaemia might be due to donating blood about 12 weeks ago. I've never done it before (and my iron levels were fine in the pre-donation test) so don't know if it 'usually' takes this long for iron levels to replenish. Dr has prescribed me iron tablets for 2 months. I haven't actually spoken to her yet though - it's been done via messages. I have my HRT appt on Tuesday.

That sounds as if it could be the reason, hopefully the tablets bring it back to normal.

I spoke to the GP today and start b12 injections next week. Guess I’ll see if they help before pursuing HRT.
