What to discuss with GP about going on HRT?

I've done some research and I've got a reasonable idea about the different types of estradiol. I think I will need to go on patches as they are the best for migraines. I haven't had a period for a year so I believe I need to use a patch continuously and take utrogestan (100mcg) every evening. Is that correct?

What do I need to ask the GP during the consultations? Do I need to ask for a blood test to check hormone levels before I go on HRT? Is that good practice or can I ask for HRT without a hormone check? How do I know what dosage of HRT to ask for? What other things should I be discussing? I have a list of my symptoms written down so I don't forget.

Over 45 menopause is diagnosed on symptoms. It's the GPs job to recommend dosage, timing etc which will be specific to your particular needs and experiences. Consider asking about adding in an oestrogen cream for vaginal atrophy if you have any dryness/itchyness/UTIs. Testosterone won't be considered until your other HRT is well managed, if you are interested in it.

Good to know it's managed on symptoms, ladygardener. My biggest issues are sleep problems, achy joints, hot flushes and migraines. Thanks for the reminder about oestrogen cream too. I was aware that testosterone was only considered after other HRT was well managed.
