Hair loss - do I need to up the oestrogen?

I have had a hysterectomy so use oestrogen patches only. Started on 50 mcg patches and upped to 75 about a year ago. Symptoms ox anxiety, depression, insomnia, itch and vaginal dryness all gone.

But I have started to notice lots more hair coming out in the shower and when I brush it. My hair is very thick so is not "thin" even with the extra loss but it's not right for me, if you see what I mean. Is it worth upping my patch to a 100 mcg? Or are there other things which would help?

I would be cautious - excess oestrogen can exacerbate hair loss. I would suggest seeing the doctor first to rule out any other deficiencies that might be causing it.

I’d look at trying a hair and nail supplement first.

Was talking about hair loss with a friend recently. We're both in our 50s and have suffered hair loss.

We've both been diagnosed with low folates and are taking folic acid. It has made a noticeable difference in both of us. My hairdresser commented about how much thicker my hair was without me saying anything.

You can buy folic acid over the counter in any supermarket or pharmacy. I was advised to take it for 4 months.

@annonymousse hi, I read your reply about folic acid. I'm now 62, but have noticed a lot of hair loss. At my age do you think folic acid would help? I'm getting very upset at being able to really see my scalp especially at my temples. I'd appreciate any advice or recommendations.

GenieGenealogy · 06/08/2023 14:27

I was taking folic acid, Vit D and mutivits but got out of the habit. Time to start again.

thanks for all advice. My other symptoms are under control on the 75 mcg patch and I don't really want to start fiddling, I moved from patches to gel and had an awful time with it.

@Biffatcrafts I think it's definitely worth a try. Obviously I can't guarantee it will work but it won't do you any harm. It's not expensive to buy either so nothing to lose. Hope it does the trick

Also add vit d calcium and magnesium for hair

and check your thyroid levels

But if none of those help, then yes you could consider upping your patch level

I take a liposomal vitamin B complex supplement (they all work together) and have so much new hair growth (wasn't particularly aware of losing more, either). So I would recommend that.
