Stupid question but I'm desperate! Can I take one utrogestan tablet?!

I'll preface this by saying I know this is potentially a stupid question

I was on HRT earlier this year but only for about 3 months. It suited me fine but I wasn't comfortable taking it because it caused me to to both gain weight and gave me massive food cravings

So I decided to come off it until I'd lost the weight I wanted to and then re start

So in the past 8 weeks I've lost 20 lbs with another stone to go - I'll then take it again

My issue is.. I can no longer sleep. Have had a week or two of this now and steadily getting worse. Last night was 5am before I drifted off and that's not unusual.

I'm desperate to sleep. I do all the right things. My diet is very good, my sleep hygiene the same - I cannot improve there at all

So onto my question. I know this non sleeping is down to menopause. I'm 51 and last had a period on May 20th so who knows what's happening there.

Can I just take one utrogestan tablet tonight? That used to work so well for me in knocking me out. I still have a couple of boxes in a drawer and I'm desperate to sleep so would just one be a problem?!

But what will you do for the next night and thereafter?

If you want to try anything, women here swear by magnesium (glycinate?) or you could try herbal things that are meant to help sleep.

PabloFlowerface · 02/08/2023 13:19

@JinglingSpringbells I know I know. You're completely right but I need to sleep

Take magnesium glycinate, have Epsom baths, diet very good, nytol and all manner of herbal stuff, oils .. the lot

So it popped into my head that when taking utrogestan, it made me sleepy. So that's where my thought processes went

It's unlikely to do any harm. Hormone levels go up and down like crazy anyway. I do anything for good sleep though!

PabloFlowerface · 02/08/2023 14:00

@TreesWelliesKnees yeah I hear you! I know with almost complete certainty that this is hormone related. I count myself lucky that I have no other symptoms but I don't feel so lucky right now - I just can't take another night seeing every single damn hour and then suddenly it's light outside!

I'm going to just take one tonight. What's the worst that can happen? (Famous last words!)

I imagine the worst that might happen is a bit of spotting or an early period?

Insomnia is awful. Mine was terrible before HRT.

PabloFlowerface · 02/08/2023 17:56

@TreesWelliesKnees yep - it's ridiculous isn't it when you're in the thick of it.

I'm going to throw caution to the wind and take one tonight. Fingers crossed I won't keel over!
