Late / no period after 4 months on HRT - how to do progesterone

sleepraptor · 21/07/2023 21:38

I started 2 pumps estrogel with the progesterone tablets for 12 days (days 15 to 26) 4 months ago. My periods were still fairly regular (26 to 29 days) with one random month being 35 days just before I started the HRT.

I am now on day 39 and still no period. So, my questions:
(1) is this normal and caused by the HRT, or is it just my underlying cycle lengthening?
(2) do I just not take the progesterone again until I get a period and then do it from day 15? So if i skipped a period but then had one a month later would that mean you have 6 weeks off the progesterone?

I'm 45. Done a pregnancy test and it's negative but will be doing another tomorrow morning to allay my paranoia about that! But sure it will also be negative.

Thanks!

No, you take the progesterone every 15-26 days.

So if the first time you took progesterone was the 15th of the month, you take it again every 15th of the month from then on.

Your periods pre HRT are now irrelevant. Your New cycle is dictated by the HRT.

Eg. When I was using utrogestan, I started taking it on the 21st of the month every single month. Which meant I always started bleeding around the 4th of the following month.

Similar here, think I’ve done 5 or 6 months of hrt now and I’m on day 36, no period.

I do 14 on / 14 off of progesterone, regardless of period, though not sure if that’s right. I mentioned to the GP that im spotting a lot and my period has got erratic and not in line with the progesterone. She wasn’t overly helpful, but to be honest im thinking of coming off / going on sertraline as I was hoping low mood / memory was menopause but I think it’s depression.

Have you had your 3 month check?

sleepraptor · 21/07/2023 22:27

Thanks both. That's interesting, so I have misunderstood it! I'll re-read what I was given.

I did the 3 month check but other than weight gain, it was all going well at that point. It's only after month 4 that i haven't had this period.

I used to just sync the progesterone to my natural cycle but now it's stopping I think I need to switch to continuous progesterone/oestrogen. Will see what's recommended on here as well.

Yes my first three months weren’t massively different but I had a 10 day period last time and now I’m on day 36 and still hasn’t started. It’s v weird.

This was me last month! 9 days later than expected and two negative pregnancy tests i got my period

Im on 3rd cycle of hrt with estradiol gel pumps, and utrogestan day 15-27

Spoke to Dr; she said it’s really normal and to take the utrogestan at the same time you normally would as if your period had started ie at day 15

So as i understand it, it’s so the cycles are like clockwork and not driven by the bleed

Period when it came was awful and i had terrible breast pain before and during

My periods only aligned with the progesterone for the first few months. My standard period pre-hrt was every 28 days. Then it slipped to around every 42 days, which I used to have pre-babies. So I started progesterone cycle on the 25th of each month, random date as it's my birth date, and have kept that going.

Recently, my last proper period was in Feb. I spotted in April, have just had a normal period, aligned with the progesterone, after 100 odd days!

My body now just seems to do what it wants, which is strange as I was so regular before.

It's so confusing! Really good to see others' experiences though.

Another negative test thankfully so I can put that out my mind.

I think what I find odd is that I thought the progesterone helped trigger the period. But if ot doesn't and you have a random 40 day cycle one month then revert to say 28 days, but always take the progesterone on the original day 15, you'll end up taking the progesterone on day 3 of your cycle whilst you're still actually bleeding which doesn't feel right!

I get taking it consistently every 28 days makes sense if you're not having many periods and it actually triggers a period.

I wonder if it's the HRT making periods fo longer or that would have happened anyway so it's my natural cycle that's actually getting longer.

Gp recently told me to take one utrogestan daily without break instead of the two weeks of taking two pills. Periods have never aligned with the progesterone and are now really unpredictable. My moods are all over the place. I'm going for a mirena in August.
