Anyone have bad experience with testosterone?

Started on the gel (one small sachet to last 10 days) a few months ago. While I do feel that libido has improved a bit it's not been amazing and I've not had any more energy than usual or sleeping any better (both of which I thought might improve)

I've been feeling quite down/dull and anxious lately and really don't have much reason to. I've never been prone to moodiness or anxiety, my peri symptoms were rage, night sweats, brain fog and this has all improved with the HRT. So I'm wondering if the testosterone is what's causing my low mood now. Has anyone else experienced this? I've only heard great things about it so am disappointed that it hasn't really had a hugely positive effect for me and if this low level anxiety/depression is down to the testosterone then I'll stop it.

Hopeful bump x

Sorry no advice. My mum has had a mix of patches and gel and recently for the first time since her 20's (she's 50) had to go on a low dose of antidepressants so I think it must be common with the changes your body is making to feel a bit out of sorts before you find the right meds for you

Sorry, I can't advise, but I've been feeling the same! Oestrogen has helped my mood a lot, and I've been fine with progesterone, but I just feel so "meh" since starting testosterone. Really low energy, and just can't be arsed with anything. I've got some autoimmune issues going on too, so it might not be the testosterone - so hard to tell. Hopefully somebody else who knows more will come along soon!

I think I'm going to stop using it. It's really the only thing that's changed for me in the last few months (using the gel) and coincides with my really low mood and anxiety. I don't see the point in using it if I'm not feeling any huge benefit, it's helped my libido but it's not worth it when I feel so bad otherwise! I really felt the difference with the HRT so hoping I'll feel better once I've stopped the testosterone. Fingers crossed!

I felt meh before I started testosterone, but the GP correctly identified that my oestrogen dose was too low for me and got that upped. That perked me up nicely. Testosterone just helped with my libido (although less now than initially).

My doctor told me that if your oestrogen is too low your body will change the testosterone into oestrogen so maybe try upping your oestrogen dose to see if that makes a difference. Also apparently the testosterone does take a while to work. It may be placebo but I think testosterone has improved my motivation and concentration.

I found it helped with libido a bit (seems to have tailed off again now) but hasn’t helped with motivation and energy as I hoped it might. I don’t think it has made my mood worse for me though. I have worse acne and a hairier chin since I started it. Maybe I am converting it to oestrogen as someone suggests in this thread - I am about to increase that.

SamR36 · 31/07/2023 18:41

I was told the same. Your oestrogen has to be st optimal level otherwise the testosterone will convert to oestrogen & you wouldn't reap the benefits of the testosterone.
Try upping the oestrogen and may be this will help

Yup same here- I saw no change in mood/libido, just got hairier legs so stopped after about 4 months. I may talk to my Dr when I get a chance and see whether I should up the oestrogen.

SamR36 · 31/07/2023 21:18

I saw big difference in mood, libido big no no, nowt changed there.
Im gonna take note to see if i get hairier.
