Perimenopausal and crying bouts

My periods are all over the place but for 7-10 days before my period, I experience very low mood, feeling completely rubbish at my job, tearful to the point that my eyes just leak constantly and feeling utterly hopeless. When my period starts I go back to normal.
I am on HRT (patches) - when this first started happening a couple of years ago, I went on antidepressants too which worked to be honest but as they affected my libido , i came off them a few months ago.
The GP wants to put me back on them - has anyone experienced similar? Are antidepressants the only way??

Have the GPs not considered that it's related to the progesterone? (assuming you take/use progesterone)

This is how I was for the progesterone part of the cycle each month.

dottydoooda · 12/07/2023 20:47

Def related to that part of the cycle.
The GP hasn’t really been that helpful to be honest - antidepressants seems to be the staple response.
My patch is combined oestrogen/ progesterone. Did you try anything different?

I went on to Mirena and gel so a steadier dose of progesterone.it helped with mood swings.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 13/07/2023 17:56

@dottydoooda yes, I've also moved to the Mirena coil. I have had the odd moment where I have thought about crying, but nothing near as bad as before.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 13/07/2023 17:56

Have you thought about increasing your estrogen too?

I am on 100 patch with my mirena.

dottydoooda · 13/07/2023 21:58

Maybe I need to look into the mirena in that case! Have you had any side effects from the mirena- some of the horror stories have put me off in the past!

Not so far. You mean the depression etc? This is last chance saloon for me as I am so sensitive to progesterone, if this doesn't work then I will have to stop HRT.

But so far no awful side effects. The odd moment where I was closer to tears than normal.

I have felt very tired but as I've been bleeding for a fortnight I reckon that's just my ferritin levels so I'm taking Iron again.

Thank you @Moredarkchocolateplease

Am interested to hear that you’re sensitive to progesterone as having reflected on the different HRT that I’ve taken over the past 3 years, it’s always the progesterone part of the cycle where I’ve had an issue. When I was on the synthetic tablets for example, I used to wake up early with my heart racing/ feeling very anxious etc etc.
