If hormonal contraceptives badly affected your mood

How did you get on with HRT? I have suffered terribly with my moods over the years; PND with both children and awful PMT for a couple of days every month. It's not so bad now I know what it is, and it passes. I can't be on hormonal contraceptives as my mood dives on them. I have taken norithersterone (sp?) this month to delay my period and on day 2 I feel like shit; tired, pointless, on the verge of tears.

I am so nervous about menopause; what if I can't cope with the mood swings and it's constant not 1 day a month? What if HRT doesn't agree with me and equally sends me into a depressive state?

I assume HRT is similar to other kinds of hormonal medications? Did anyone miraculously do ok with HRT despite having similar struggles as me above?

I have the same and can't take progesterone. I'm now 50 and so far (touch wood), I'm not suffering any worse than I have been in the past. I get very sore boobs (much more sore than before) pre period but if anything, my mood swings are getting better not worse. I'm not sure if that's because the progesterone is getting less (as well as the oestrogen).

I did wonder if it was progesterone that I'm struggling with (that's what's in the period delay one) I struggled with mini pill which is the same, but then I suffered terribly with Yasmin which I gather is a higher dose of oestrogen 😞

I couldn't tolerate the pill (admittedly ages ago, stopped trying) but am fine with oestrogel and Utrogestan, the bio-identical HRTs. I was concerned, like you, which is why I requested these from my GP. I use the Utrogestan vaginally to reduce chances of side effects. Put odd starting for ages as I was worried, and no issues. Some people do find Utrogestan problematic, but you may well be fine.

  • put off starting...

The last contraceptive pill I was on made me feel suicidal. I've been very well on HRT (Oestrogel and Utrogestan), no problems at all with mood.
