Bloating caused by too much oestrogen?

Been on 4 x pumps of oestrogel for nearly a year and that seemed to be my sweet spot where my symptoms became manageable.

Since about March I’ve been really bloated on and off almost constantly, sometimes with an uncomfortable tummy ache. Very low down. It’s really getting me down and I can’t fit into half my clothes! It’s not weight gain.

I’ve had a scan for ovarian cysts and all clear. GP suggested having a Mirena coil instead of my Utrogestan, but I’m not sure how that would sort out bloating? Other GP seems to think it’s a bowel issue and prescribed laxatives 🙄

Could the high dose of oestrogel be causing the bloating and discomfort? I thought it was progesterone that caused bloating but I can’t see any kind of pattern.

I got terrible bloating when I started on estrogen and it was before the progesterone phase.

Same thing happened each time I went up a patch strength. It does always settle down, but in general even though my weight is the same, my very low stomach over my uterus llprotrudes more than it did.

But this is just my anecdotal experience.

I'm trying a coil next month.

Thanks. Strange thing is I haven’t changed my dose or anything. It just started out of nowhere.

I’m wondering whether to risk reducing to 3 pumps but I don’t want all my other symptoms to come back!

Bloating is basically wind due to eating food that causes wind.
Or it's constipation. (why are you being given laxatives? How often do you poo?)

Does that ring a bell?
Unlikely to be estrogen.

@JinglingSpringbells I don’t think it’s diet related as I haven’t eaten anything that I don’t normally eat. I really look after my gut health too.

I thought bloating was a common hormonal symptom and not always caused by food? I’ve had an ovarian cyst in the past and the bloating was horrible until it went.

Depends what bloating really means. I've always thought it a bit of a vague term. For some people it means wind (trapped) and for others it's fluid retention (part of PMS.)

Upped oestrogel to three pumps from two feel bloated legs heavy like water retention anyone else had this thinking lowering back two pumps doctor told me up due to low mood

Moredarkchocolateplease · 25/02/2025 03:23

@Nd1969 well does it depend on what's worse? Swollen legs or low mood? I'd rather have bad legs and do some exercise/drink some water to help, than feel mentally dreadful?
