Question about periods stopping

I know we are all different, but I'm at that stage now (47 and been perimenopausal for 3 years).

I just wondered if they are likely to stop suddenly, or if it's a gradual "here and there" process.
At the moment I feel like I'm somewhere in between, and it's not a pleasant feeling.

I'm limited to treatments (hormone) due to my hemiplegic migraines.

It's very person dependent

You can get
Gradually decrease in volume and frequency
Erratic occurrences but perhaps with high volumes
Becoming more frequent with greater / less volume
You may get months of nothing and then an unpredictable flood

Iwantcakeeveryday · 24/05/2023 10:58

yes very all over the place for me similar age and 7 years now and still get periods every 3 or 4 months but not for long. send me raging though!

I have been wondering the same thing , as I’m 49 , and have had constant spotting the last 3 weeks , I’m hoping this is it .

kizziee · 24/05/2023 15:52

I had about 2 years of extremely heavy periods and flooding. Then periods started to space out. So would have maybe 6 or 7 a year. Then 3-4 months between each period and they were much lighter before they eventually stopped.

I am the same age as you and have been following pattern 3 above for the last three years or so: cycle length is now 22 days on average, but the period only lasts 2 days. A week before I get insomnia and, lately, hot flashes. Fun!
I wonder whether they will eventually space out and then stop or just stop or what.

mondaytosunday · 24/05/2023 16:08

Mine just shortened and lightened, became irregular then finally stopped. I got off very lightly - no hot flushes, no brain fog, nothing.

Mrsjayy · 24/05/2023 16:12

I was light for a few years then just stopped I had a period 1 month and have had nothing for nearly 2 years I'm 52.

Mrsjayy · 24/05/2023 16:14

My peri /menopause was horrendous though I had Hrt for 2 years which helped .

ChopperC110P · 24/05/2023 16:16

Early 50s here and still regular as clockwork. 🤷‍♀️
Would love to be rid of the bastarding period by now.

defnotadomesticgoddess · 24/05/2023 16:38

My cycle changed to 21 days and each period lasted for 2 weeks, (were really heavy) that was for I think 5/6 years. Then occasionally went from 21 days to 60 days for a couple of years. Then last 4 periods were about 100 days then they stopped.

gogohmm · 24/05/2023 16:44

I've been light for the last 18 months tgen 6 weeks ago a medium flow one which annoyed me. I'm ready for them to stop!

5 or 6 years😱

Mine are currently around a week of heavy bleeding and then several more days of spotting. Every three weeks. I can't do another 5 years of this shit!

KnickerlessParsons · 24/05/2023 16:57

I had a huge gush one day in work (very embarrassing) and that was the end of my periods. I was about 45ish.

HamBone · 24/05/2023 17:04

Yep, it’s very individual from what I’ve heard. I’ll be 49 this year and mine are regular, but have shortened to about 4 days.

One of my friends said that hers just stopped, no other symptoms- I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a similar experience. 🤞

I agree, @ChopperC110P , I’m sick of the bloomin’ things.😂

Some of mine are like that. I dare not leave the house without a mattress style pad. Even then I don't feel 100% safe. 😳

Everyone’s different I think. I’ve been quite lucky so far re hot flushes etc. Seem to have gone through it quite similar to my mum did.

mrschocolatte · 25/05/2023 07:07

Mine stopped 7 years ago at the age of 44. Once I passed the one year mark post periods, I started getting hot flushes and brain fog and started oral HRT. I had no periods in that whole time except for one bleed about 3 years ago. It was so unusual I was referred to a gynaecologist and had an internal check done but all was ok. HRT was brilliant as it kept all my symptoms in check. Then in November last year I felt like I was starting to get symptoms again so I saw a menopause specialist and I was moved from oral HRT to the combined patch. Since February I have had three horrendous periods. Each lasting longer than the last. I’m currently 3 weeks into my latest one. I am miserable. I don’t understand why they’ve come back after so long. The GP thinks it will all settle down as my body gets used to the change in HRT. The amusing part has been discovering period pants and period swimwear. Both amazing but I never thought at 51 and after so many period free years this is what I’d be doing!
