HRT has given me a sex drive, what contraception?!

Hoping for some inspiration please!

I've recently started HRT, I'm 46 and still have regular periods.

Suddenly I have a sex drive back. My husband is pretty happy 😃 and we are getting on better than ever as I'm no longer grumpy!

Previously we had sex so infrequently (and I really do mean once a year infrequently) that we used condoms.

What options are there when on HRT as I feel a bit old for condoms and neither of us like them. I absolutely don't want a coil.

Pill? Injection? Implant? The list is endless.

At 46 your fertility has declined massively, so a coil/pill etc seem overkill. Can you even take the a pill and HRT together? Can your DH get the snip? So much simpler than you sorting contraception, and if he does this he's got a good 7 years of carefree sex ahead of him! Good incentive. Otherwise condoms?

Mini pill? You can take it with HRT, no problem.

AnnaMagnani · 21/05/2023 10:25

Minipill. Goes with HRT and no periods, a great bonus.

Husband get the snip

DH won't be having a vasectomy. He had testicular cancer a few years ago and I think he's been through enough in that department!

I think I have to consider the mini pill or maybe implants if they are possible with HRT. I'm slightly worried about upsetting the balance of my hormones though given I've only just got them sorted out!

I have the mini pill, oestrogel and utrogestan- I take 100mg utrogestan every night as the mini pill provides part of the progesterone (alongside contraception), I’m 42 and have been menopausal since 37 due to autoimmune issues.

You are so lucky! HRT killed off my peri-menopausal second spring!

Seriously79 · 21/05/2023 19:13

What HRT are you taking OP? I'm in need of a boost! 😉

ihavewokenup · 21/05/2023 20:59

@Seriously79 Estelle Duet 1mg

I barely know what has come over me! Blush

Does anyone use the mini pill with tablet form HRT?

AprilSmiles · 23/05/2023 17:53

Diaphragm as your risk of conceiving is relatively low and there's no risk of interacting hormones.
