Can chill's be a symptom of perimenopause?

Most people talk about hot flushes but I've been getting chills for a while now, I just put it down to winter at first and then I had covid so thought it might be a hangover from that but now I'm wondering if it's actually another peri symptom. Anybody has this?

I’ve had chills this past week, then did a Covid test, for me it’s Covid

tribpot · 30/04/2023 12:56

Yep, I have them as well.

Beanso · 30/04/2023 13:09

@Chickenkorma64 covid was nearly 6 weeks ago for me

@tribpot is it a peri symptom for you? How long has it been going on? I'm generally a cold person anyway and I hate being cold so this feels unbearable

Yep, peri symptom for me. Been going on for about 4-5 years (intermittently, I haven't been cold for all that time!)

Doggydarling · 30/04/2023 13:12

I believe so. I always felt the cold but for a few years before starting hrt my dh used to say I was like a car with broken aircon, I was either boiling over or frozen. One particularly memorable time was when we were lying back relaxing in lovely warm sea water in 39° sunshine and I started to shiver, he thought I was joking until he touched me and then insisted I get out of the water, I felt so cold he got really nervous, we went home, by the time we'd got there (15 min drive) I was warm but exhausted. These episodes with hot flushes missed in went on a few years until I started hrt. Now I've a normal body temperature, if its cold outside I feel cold and likewise if its warm.

Yes, I'm either too hot or REALLY cold, right down to my bones and it takes me ages to warm up.

AWaferThinMint · 30/04/2023 13:14

Well this is illuminating. I just spent three days frozen for no reason, even went sat by a hot radiator!

coughingbean · 30/04/2023 13:27

I have heard that "cold flushes" are indeed a thing!
My sister did an HR course all about menopause, seemed very interesting!

Beanso · 30/04/2023 13:57

Evenings are the worst I'm getting so cold all I want to do is go to bed to try and get warm, I've even been sleeping in socks which I have never been able to do in the past

Have you had your thyroid checked? Feeling cold all the time can be a symptom of an underactive thyroid.

JackieQueen · 01/05/2023 22:29

I had the hot flushes immediately followed by cold chills, I was constantly taking clothes off then desperately putting them back on. Drove me mad, it eventually settled down though.

Rufus27 · 01/05/2023 22:31

Yes, definitely. One of my first symptoms.

EmmaEmerald · 01/05/2023 22:35

I thought this too but mum and I think it might just be how we are made!

I started having cold flashes, even on hot nights, in a stupidly hot flat. Like my body temp just plummets. This started when I was 42 and was noticeable as it was really hot.

mum just remembers them for all her adult life. She might be misremembering. She's drastically underweight now, aged 84, and I'm overweight.

I don't cope with sudden temp changes. When I was young, not fat,
I was on holiday in Palm Springs in winter and the daytime 20+ and nightime zero made me feel a bit ill.

Me too.

I work outside, and seem to get really old in the evening when I sit down (I actually have one of those microwaveable heat pads behind my back right now!). Then when I get in bed I’m too hot. So fed up of it!

EmmaEmerald · 01/05/2023 23:44

I don't have the too hot bit at all. It's so strange.

Newgolddream70 · 02/05/2023 00:05

This was actually one of my first subtle symptoms. I kept thinking I was coming down with something.
