Mirena for HRT

Hi,
new here.
I started hrt 9 months ago. Evorel patch and utrogestan. I had some bleeding and was fast tracked for a scan. All came back fine. Thin lining etc.
My doctor upped my patch to 50 mg evorel and the bleeding came back. Sent for another scan and lining was 6 mm. fast tracked for hysteroscopy and had a polyp removed an endometrial biopsy and the Mirena coil fitted.
After an anxious wait my biopsies came back all clear.

problem is that have been spotting and having light bleeding since the coil was fitted 4 weeks ago.
anyone have an experience of this? Doctor says give it another month to settle but I can’t help worrying. She also said that the biopsy result was definitively normal so not to worry about that.

I think any coil / new start on HRT can cause spotting and bleeding for at least 6 months. I’ve been told they won’t investigate until then as it often takes a while to settle.

Findyourneutralspace · 31/03/2023 08:38

I had random spotting when I first got my mirena coil and thought it wouldn’t be for me but it settled down after a month or so. My periods didn’t stop completely, just dwindled down to about a half day spotting once a month. That was pre menopause though.

Starlightstarbright1 · 31/03/2023 08:43

I had the coil fitted prior to hrt had spotting for a few months

Revengeofthepangolins · 31/03/2023 08:44

V normal

Abra1t · 31/03/2023 08:47

Was the same for me when I had my first one. Plus the hysteroscopy and biopsy can cause bleeding. I’ve had six now and usually have a bit of discharge for some days after each of them.

Emma54 · 31/03/2023 08:48

Thanks for messages. I’ve so anxious and convinced that I had something terrible.
is bleeding normal even though im post menopausal?
thanks

6 hysteroscopies?poor you Why is that?
im 4 weeks post operation so I am thinking it’s the Mirena that’s causing it now. Had no bleeding for first week after the procedure.

This is completely normal and nothing to be concerned about, especially in view of the biopsy results.

Emma54 · 31/03/2023 10:06

Thank you. I am reassured by this. X

I think I was spotting for several months after Mirena was fitted. Then it calmed down and stopped and now I have no spotting, no periods at all. Give it a bit of time and try not to worry.

Emma54 · 01/04/2023 12:46

Thanks all xx

@WhereAreWeNow was this daily? I got the coil to stop irregular bleeding and now I have just spotted daily for the last 3 months and I’m worried it’ll never stop 😭 xx

WhereAreWeNow · 25/04/2023 15:44

@Mrsworried1 it was daily but it got lighter and lighter over time and then stopped completely. No spotting for over a year now. I would stick with it if I were you. Maybe go back to GP if you're still spotting at 6 months?

Mrsworried1 · 25/04/2023 20:24

Thank you, I have a follow up appointment with gynaecology so hopefully they can advise- will be due to see them after 6 months. Mine goes between light and heavy. I feel so fed up xx

bigTillyMint · 26/04/2023 13:07

@Emma54, after being on HRT for years, due to spotting and proper bleeding/cramping, I had a hysteroscopy/polyps removed/Mirena fitted a week ago. So very similar to you.

@Mrsworried1, Now cramping and bleeding again - so fed up with it. I hope it doesn’t take 6months to stop!

Emma54 · 17/05/2023 08:14

Hope your spotting has stopped. Mine has eased considerably. Stopped for a month or so, just the odd bit of light bleeding. Try not to worry. X

@bigTillyMint

has your bleeding stopped? Xx

OP posts:
bigTillyMint · 17/05/2023 14:23

@Emma54, glad to hear yours has eased. After a lot of bleeding for about a fortnight or so after the op, mine has been a lot lighter including a few days with nothing. Currently dark spotting with mild cramps and waiting for a letter for a scan to check where the Mirena is as no strings )nurse checked)

I’ve got a GP appointment tomorrow (f2f!!) to talk about feeling absolutely drained and also anxiety at night - I’m taking iron and hoping it will settle, but I’m so fed up.

Mrsworried1 · 17/05/2023 15:24

Im still bleeding. Had my coil fitted end of January. (Not for HRT but to stop irregular bleeding 🙄) and I am absolutely fed up. Stopped for a week and now back to light period daily. I am at my wits end! 16 weeks in now, I don’t have much hope for it! Xx

bigTillyMint · 17/05/2023 15:41

@Mrsworried1, I don’t blame you feeling fed up - who wants light bleeding/spotting every day?

Mrsworried1 · 17/05/2023 15:47

Trying to reassure my self it still might stop from reading threads on here. It’s affecting me mentally, and I’m tired too! I had a smear, gynaecology referral and finally hysteroscopy and d&c, which ruled out anything terrible but it’s still causing such bad anxiety! X

bigTillyMint · 17/05/2023 16:16

@Mrsworried1, I’m sure after all those tests they have surely ruled out anything terrible and it must be hormones causing it.

Im sure it’s hormones causing mine too, but I’m so fed up of still bleeding/cramping as you must be!
