Weird Period on HRT

BooseysMom · 27/03/2023 06:34

Hi,
I have been on Evorel 50 patches and Utrogesten for half of every cycle and this is my 4th month on this regime. My periods have always been regular to the day when suddenly this month I have a tiny bit of red bleeding and then brown stuff and then after 2 days of this, nothing. Sorry TMI but not enough to warrant using a tampon. It reminded me exactly of when I was pregnant without realising! I'm 50 and rarely get up to much sexy stuff with DH although it has been known to happen a few times a month, but surely at 50 I can't be pregnant!! Anyway my question is if this is the start of my periods changing/ending, how do I know when to start counting the 14 days from the first day of my cycle when starting the Utrogesten? Do I need to swap on to another patch?
Thanks x

Don't you just take your utrogestan regularly- no matter what your cycle is? I was told to take mine 14 days on, 14 days off.

JinglingSpringbells · 28/03/2023 09:12

You should take Utrogestan on the same day each month.

My specialists says choose a date like the 1st and take it for 12 days, then repeat the next month etc etc.

You can't follow your own cycle in peri or post meno.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 28/03/2023 09:17

Mine said to take it from day 14 so the first sign of blood or spotting is day 1 so take it 14 days later. The reason for taking it is to stimulate the shedding of the uterus as we don't have proper periods anymore and it needs to go or will build up and cause adhesions. When you stop after 14 days the body should be prompted to shed .

Brazilagogo · 28/03/2023 09:19

I have a similar regime and have the spotting/brown discharge for several days before my Utrogestan finishes, then a couple of days of “proper” bleeding when I stop the Utrogestan. I don’t know if it’s normal (although I have had an ultrasound so it’s not sinister) but it is a nuisance.

Are you using contraception though? Not clear from your OP, and I know someone who had a very big surprise at 51...

the uterus as we don't have proper periods anymore and it needs to go or will build up and cause adhesions

It doesn't cause adhesions @Greensleevevssnotnose (Adhesions are something very different.)

If the lining gets too thick, it can develop irregular cells, and some of them can be cancerous- endometrial cancer.

Hi everyone, thanks so much for your posts.
It says to take the Utrogesten day 15 for 14 days and usually I have a proper bleed when I finish but this time it was a week early and wasn't a proper bleed. The last 2 days I have been suffering with bad headaches, palpitations and mood swings. I'm giving it a couple more days then I'm phoning the doc.

😳no I don't bother with it! I can't have the pill as I have bad side effects and have tried everything else so gave up bothering

I would do a pregnancy test first of all, but it is most likely to be the HRT

Yeah it's the hrt I reckon cos I have never stayed on it as long as I have this time. Usually I give up as it has absolutely no effect on my symptoms! I don't take many risks with dtd! (which pisses DH off no doubt!)

My HRT didn't have any impact on my symptoms so I increased the oestrogen from 50 to 75 and I started to feel much better.

I take my utrogestan from the 21st day of every month. Never synced it to my non HRT periods.

Thanks. That might be the answer. I'll ask the gp about increasing it. The pills say take day 15 of cycle for 14 days but I've always had regular periods up to now.

I had very similar for my 4th month as well! Sort of an implant bleed, then was a week late for proper period. I did a test but negative (thank fuck). Hopefully things revert to normal this month.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 29/03/2023 20:21

But the periods in HRT are not periods, they are just bleeds caused by the progesterone.

So I put my first patch on about day four of my last proper period. And I am now in month three about to have my third 'bleed'. It isn't a period.

Also I just counted to day 15 from the date of the very first patch and stuck that specific day of the month in my calendar. So from the 21st of every month I take utrogestan for 12 days and then stop. And at some point I get a bleed. I don't let the bleed dictate how i take my HRT, my HRT dictates the bleed.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 29/03/2023 20:22

I think @JinglingSpringbells refers to breakthrough bleeds which are caused by the oestrogen. Which could be the cause of the random bleeds described up thread.

Phew!! Well today I feel like I'm on drugs! I feel really weird and have pinned pupils, am hot and red in the face and have sweaty palms! I can't even take my BP as my dad has our machine. I even have a nasty taste in my mouth which makes me wonder about pregnancy. I’ve just finished the 14 days of Utrogesten and have the patch on. I feel like I want out again.
