Palpitations and alcohol

Does anyone else find that their meno symptoms get significantly worse if they have had a few drinks? I'm 40 and in early meno, lots of symptoms, long family history etc. Was expecting it to hit early. I've been on patches for about 6 weeks, first at 25 and now at 50. My symptoms have really improved. However, the palpitations are driving me insane and they seem to get worse with alcohol.

I don't drink much at all, 1 or 2 units a week if anything. Mostly nothing, just can't do it anymore. However last night I went out out, enjoyed myself a lot, and am now wide awake at 5am with THE WORST palpitations I've ever had in my life. Its been going on all night.

Do others get this? I will speak to my GP about it but am curious to know others experience. Mine are usually worse at night anyway but not like this.

Hi OP I've had palpitations for years as an ectopic beat. Usually before my period and always after alchocol and now much more constantly present since I started HRT.

I've had them investigated but they are benign.

My tip is honestly just learn to live with them. I've had years when they are really bad and I've ended up over breathing which gives you pins and needles in your mouth and hands. Now if I get them I just ignore.

And if you haven't given up caffeine yet, it makes a big difference.

Yep, the exact same reason that I'm awake reading this. I mostly don't drink any more, this is one of the reasons why.

I get this. I am in my late 20s but after alcohol I will get palpitations the whole day following the night before. I will also get them when I’m tired or if I’ve had too much caffeine.

It seems as though many things trigger them for me and I understand how unsettling they can be. Try and drink a lot of water, if you are even slightly dehydrated it will enhance them.

Yep, that and the burning face made me give it up. It’s not worth it.

And the other thing that gave me palpitations was having low ferritin.

Thank you all, this is so reassuring! Just seems no point to drinking if it makes me feel like this. Not sure I'm ready to give up caffeine yet. I did have a brew before bed though so am sure that didn't help!!

I always get a faster resting heart rate after alcohol. I drink rarely but would still like to on a night out.

Sitting here with palps right now.
Had a couple of glasses of wine last night.
Am due out again tonight. I think I will drive!
It's so annoying. I am actually linking it to the HRT. Does anyone else feel they are linked?

Piggywaspushed · 18/03/2023 16:15

Yes, same for me. And I start vomiting if I have had no sleep. Could also be low iron so get that checked.

HRT has made no difference whatsoever that I can tell.
