Is very heavy bleeding normal with HRT?

Interested to hear others initial experiences of HRT. I’ve only been on HRT for about 3 weeks, prescribed 200mg Utrogesten (14 days) and 1 pump of Estrogel daily. All good. Felt loads better. The Utrogesten was in short supply at the time, so I was only given 9 days worth, with a promise more stock would be available in a few days. It wasn’t. So in desperation I got an alternative progesterone prescribed, Provera, but that was only 1 x 10mg tablet daily (14 days.) Fast forward to today, and oh my goodness!! The amount of blood I’ve lost during the day is nuts! I use a mooncup, which used to last from morning until I got home from work, but today I’m emptying a brim-full one every half hour! And the clots! Golf ball sized ones every time! Does any of this sound normal, and do I just persevere for a couple of months? Or was the Provera possibly too low a dose? All new to this and I’m a bit worried about going to bed tonight incase I wake up to carnage in the morning!! My doctor assured me my periods would be much lighter..

Are you still having natural periods?

If so, that may explain it. Adding estrogen to your own can make you have heavier periods.

On one pump that does sound a lot because you have had 14 days or progestogen- 9 of Utrogestan and 5 of provera.

Just wait and see what happens next time.

Yes, my periods were still occurring naturally, I’m 45 and peri-menopausal. GP said to start off on one pump of oestrogen and maybe increase to two. I’m reluctant to try two for a while. I think getting my right dosage of HRT will likely need some tweaking. My feeling is maybe the lower dosage Provera wasn’t quite sufficient, however I have managed to get the rest of my Utrogesten prescription this evening, so hopefully my next period will be an improvement… fingers crossed…
