How soon before bed do you take utrogestan?

I keep reading that it can make you sleepy, but I'm on my knees by 7pm and can't go to bed until 9pm.

Should I take it just before I lie down or earlier?

I don't have any sleep issues, it won't make me feel groggy will it? I get up at 4.30/5 most days.

Should have added I need to take my first dose tonight.

Take it as you get into bed.

It doesn't work like a sleeping pill- it's not like that.
Once asleep you might find you sleep a bit more soundly. But not everyone finds that.

One side effect can be dizziness which kicks in about an hour after taking it.

That's why they say take at bedtime. It wears off quickly, so you won't feel dizzy in the morning.

Do you work shifts? ie 4.30am start?

Dogsgottabone · 21/01/2023 16:21

Thanks @JinglingSpringbells no, no shifts, but 5-6am is my time, so I use it for exercise before getting DC up for school. So I don't want to feel groggy as that's the only hour in the day that's purely for me, my airpod and my exercise 😊

I will take it just as I go to bed. Thank you for your advice.

Hats off to you for getting up so early when it's freezing cold and pitch black outside! Amazing.

Dogsgottabone · 21/01/2023 19:46

@JinglingSpringbells the trick is a strong headtorch and the knowledge that an hour extra in bed will leave me feeling groggy and shattered. Whereas a power walk whilst hard to start always leaves me feeling better. And frankly it's so early, by 9am it's as if it never happened 😃

I was told to take it on empty stomach -
but I snack in the evening and rarely have an empty stomach …
I hope that is not a problem….

Dogsgottabone · 22/01/2023 09:20

@shmiz I'm the same normally! Stupidly last night I wanted to sleep at 8pm but forgot it needed to be two hrs and had a bowl of cornflakes at 7pm. So couldn't go to sleep until 9pm. Will set a 6pm timer on my phone to stop eating.

I have to leave 2hrs each side of my iron tablet too. So I'm now taking that as soon as I wake up and delaying my morning coffee by 2hrs.

@Dogsgottabone You don't actually need to have an empty stomach.

This has been commented on by menopause specialists.

The reason for an empty stomach is that the drug is absorbed more if there is food in your stomach. (the medical jargon is 'it increases its bioavailability'.)

For some women this can equal an increase in side effects.
For others it just means they sleep better (as it is slightly sedative.)

Just don't worry about it! It really doesn't matter either way and if you are prone to heavy bleeds, it is better to take with food=more absorbed=less bleeding.

@JinglingSpringbells thank you so much. You really are so helpful to so many people who post on here. 😊

Easy thing is to have it in bathroom and take it when you brush your teeth, just before you go to bed. Simples.

Dogsgottabone · 24/01/2023 17:25

Hi @WombatChocolate i take out my contact lenses, pull the covers up, slug back the pills and close my eyes 😁

I keep my tablets by my bed and take it as I get into bed and then I read for an hour ish before I sleep.
