Help!! Sleeplessness and anxiety catch 22

Hi - Just wondered if anyone has some advice- I am struggling to sleep night after night. The night before last i didn't sleep at all - not one wink- and last night I managed to sleep after about 3am for a few hours. Earlier in the week I woke up at 3.30am and didn't go back to sleep. I think menopause related anxiety is at the root it, but as the nights go on I feel increasingly worse. I am feeling quite shaky during the night and my heart is racing away, I also am getting hot flushes up my back and neck (is that normal, I though the were on your face usually?) and my heart rate seems to go up when this happens. All in all I feel that I am locked into a catch 22 situation (the less sleep I have the more anxious I become and the more anxious I become the less sleep I get). I am on patches but thats it. I will be phoning the GP tomorrow....Just wanted to know if anyone else has overcome this type of thing and if so how?!

Magnesium. Amazing difference

i get this, 1 in the morning, 1 in the afternoon and 2 in the evening.

I have tried others but have found this works best for me. Low magnesium is linked to poor sleep and many other issues.

@crunchtimekate how is this now? I’m going through the same x

Runaround50 · 01/01/2023 13:52

Yes! I was just about to post the same thing! I actually feel ill today from lack of sleep.

I can't sleep, my brain races, my heart races, my body shakes, I'm hot.. Christ it's hell.

I'm going to buy some melatonin from the USA this week, in pure desperation!

I'm on the 75 patch and mirena coil.

Hi I went to the doctors - they firstly upped by HRT patches and I had a 10 day course of a pretty hefty sleeping tablet to see if I could reset my sleeping pattern. When I stopped that it went back to square one and I had a couple of sleepless night. So then I started on a low dose of Amitriptyline which can be taken longer term for insomnia and has another benefit of helping anxiety. The doctor has had to adjust the dose but largely it is working and I have had proper nights sleep and don’t feel groggy in the morning. It’s a fix for a few months but I am worried I’ll just go back to not sleeping once I come off them, so I have started a Sleepstation course which trains you to combat insomnia. It has good reviews so fingers crossed it works. It’s free for civil servants but also I think you can get it on the NHS but not 100% sure. I agree chronic sleep deprivation is absolute hell - nothing like experienced before but I would say go to the doctors and find a short term solution to get through the next few days/weeks/months and then work on combating it long term.
