Hi

does Anyone know why some are given vegifem
and others Ovestin ?
what the difference is between them both?
and exactly what there used for and difference when using the different versions

as you can see I’m not that well informed and it’s a minefield

Ovestin is a cream, Vagifem is a pessary. Both come with an applicator for ease of use. Ovestin, I think, is slightly stronger in terms of oestrogen content, and as it's a cream it's also more easy to apply if one has external symptoms. Both are prescribed to treat vaginal symptoms of lack of oestrogen during perimenopause and postmenopause, such as vaginal atrophy, itching, soreness and urinary difficulties. Both are topical oestrogen, they are not classed as HRT as the hormone amount in them is so small. Some women find that all they need is topical treatment, others need to use one or the other alongside HRT.

That's a basic summary, hope it's useful.

I've seen women saying if there is irritation like itching or soreness Ovestin is more comfortable.

You can have both! Vagifem is for the vagina and ovestin is for the vulva. Use as much of both as you wish. Your vagina and vulva will thank you.

I use both

Hi All

I'm 57, in Menopause and have a Mirena fitted. My Gyno prescribed Vagifem for VA, and I find it great. Then a woman's GP prescribed Ovestin pressaries, saying it is stronger.

I've been using Ovestin for a couple of weeks now, inserting twice weekly. But I find it stings and seeps out during the night. I read somewhere, that Ovestin can be use once a week for VA.

I'm now thinking of HRT, low dose estrogens patches, as I suffer from hot flashes at night and what to improve my bone density. I'm seeing my own GP soon.

My questions are, can Ovestin be used once a week and is it better than Vagifem? And once on HRT do you stop vaginal estrogens?

Thanks in advance😊
