25 day period hell !!! I’m so anxious

I believe I am peri menopausal as my periods are all over the place, I’m grumpy all the time, can’t remember a thing and so hot! I’m 47 and had the mirena coil removed last November as it had been in 5 years (no periods for 5 years) I didn’t get it replaced as I though I would soon be menopausal. I wish I had as I’ve had 10 month that of hell! Periods every couple of weeks, then nothing then prolonged periods and in 29th September I started bleeding and haven’t really stopped since! It’s been so heavy that I ended up in ED last weekend where I sat for 12 hrs only to be sent away as my haemoglibin was ok so they were not worried. It stopped Tuesday with just a bit of spotting. I’ve just been to loo and it’s back again clots and heavy!! I am so anxious about it. I had scans a few months ago no fibroids and smears all ok. Is this normal for peri menopause and can periods go on and on stop start! Looking for some reassurance please xx

Your GP can prescribe Transexamic Acid to help stop the heavy bleeding, which is what I use as I’m perimenopausal. However for you I’d say they need to get to the bottom of what is causing the bleeding so I’d go back to the GP and request further investigations.

@Strawblue I’ve had a scan and no fibroids or polyps so I assume it’s just perimenopuase? Do you get prolonged bleeding or just very heavy?

If your scan was OK and you're up to date with smears I'd just get the Mirena coil back in. Now you're over 45 it can stay in for 7 years (unless you're using it as part of HRT in which case it will need changed after 5).
It does sound like perimenopausal menstrual changes.
They can take endometrial biopsies when the coil is getting fitted if there was any concerns.

Progesterone often goes first hormone wise. The mirena would have been controlling the symptoms of that (period wise). If it worked for you I would start by getting another fitted. If it wasn't great then maybe you need to look at HRT (orstrogen and utrogestan/body identical progesterone).
Progesterone also is the calming hormone...hence the anxiety.

But you do not need to put up with this. Do this and tell the GP your score - this helps "quantify" the issue for them. www.nhs.uk/conditions/heavy-periods/

Go back to the GP!

Tranexamic acid can help with heavy bleeding, whatever the cause. You take it for the first four days of your period.

HRT can help to regulate your periods and other symptoms.

You may need to consider iron tablets because of the heavy bleeding. It's likely the OTC supplements won't be strong enough. My GP has recommended 6mg iron sulfate.

I’d get the Mirena put back. I have one and it’s been great, I got Evorel patches too and my symptoms are much improved.

i had weeks of bleeding which I think was because of cervical erosion, a condition which peri hormones cause, I read. Only the smear-taking nurse noticed & told me about the CE. My flow was not life-interfering, and I do have fibroids (turns out). GP told me that peri-bleeding in the 40s is very rarely malignant, but of course can be a nuisance.

Thank you all! It’s the stop start bleeding that’s been going for over 3 weeks. Cramps also! Is that familiar for perimenopause?
