Can't Lose Weight

Americano75 · 28/09/2022 18:06

Basically that. And I'm sick of it at best, want to cry about it at worst. Usually if I stick any weight on I can get it off again pretty easily but I feel like I'm fighting against my own body and it's really getting to me.

I'm waiting for a Gynaecology appointment to see if I can be prescribed HRT but that'll be months yet. Does anyone have any tips?

Start logging everything in My Fitness Pal.
I did start piling the weight on until, when I finally had enough, I took control and stuck to 1,500 calories to lose weight.
It does take time initially to weigh and log everything but it gets quicker as you build up ‘favourites’ so you can just log with a click.
I’m thinner now than I was in my 20’s and I finally have an understanding of the impact what I eat has on my waist line. It means I make better choices and am able to maintain my weight loss.

I feel for you OP. I use MFP and log everything. Every grain of rice, splash of oil and was in a calorie deficit. Nothing came off. I’ve cut carbs instead and slowly weight it starting to move. It’s hard, hard work. I can’t get my hear around folk saying you just need to be in a calorie deficit and the weight will fall off. It certainly didn’t with me.

Weight watchers worked really well for me, even if I had a dodgy day it didn't matter because my activity levels balanced it out. I mean, my job alone sees me doing 10,000 steps easily, and I've taken up running again. It sucks.

I wish I knew. I did well and lost four pounds over four weeks. I have literally just stood in on the scales and for the third week running I have lost nothing despite keeping to my calories. I am on the verge of giving up and am in tears this morning.

I have become a fat peri blob, I wasn’t like this before. I do two exercise classes a week and walk the dog, I’m also always doing something at home/work, I don’t sit around. Yet I’ve got a meno belly.
Ive noticed that the thinner ladies older than me at work eat no/very little carbs. They live on salad and fruit. I’d starve if I just had a boiled egg and salad for lunch, but that’s how they seem to live.

Fififizz · 29/09/2022 07:13

I ditched the conventional carbs like bread, pasta, rice. I don’t calorie count but am mindful. I try avoid processed food and sugar. Ditched cappuccino for coffee with a splash of milk, I don’t drink. All the usual advice really. It’s worked but was a slow decrease. I’m still not skinny but didn’t aspire to be. Good luck.

I remember hearing/reading somewhere not to drink your calories, so ditch the alcohol and lattes as a start.

Do you need to lose weight?

like, are you overweight? Too much adipose tissue?

am only asking as so many of my meno friends talk about being fat when none of them are overweight, they are just trying to get the body of their youth back iyswim

trailrunner85 · 29/09/2022 07:23

How much are you running, OP? It's a great way of keeping the weight off in menopause, but you do have to put the miles in. Lots of the thin older women in my running club eat well, but are in constant calorie deficit due to the amount they run off.

Guys, thanks for your responses so far, much appreciated. About to rush out the door but will return tonight, got some interesting links to share!

I was in a meno weight gain spiral and couldn't fit in my clothes, so have given up sugar, refined carbs, booze and processed food for a while, and doing more weight bearing exercise (through six pack revolution) - almost three weeks in and I've lost 3kg. Sadly, I think beyond a certain age, you need to wave goodbye to the good stuff...

I’m not sure this will help, but I am
post-menopausal and am borderline underweight -not a good situation to be in either. I’m not on HRT. I don’t think about weight at all and don’t diet or calorie count.Things I do naturally - no alcohol at all ever. I’m generally vegan, so no meat, eggs, milk, but I do like cheese, so I get that occasionally. I eat carbs always with every meal. I tend to eat some chocolate most days and it hasn’t had an effect re weight gain, though in general I wouldn’t eat ultra processed foods. I also bake, so there’s generally cake around which I eat. I generally don’t exercise much but have recently started couch25k -because slimness doesn’t equal fitness. I have a full-time sedentary job.
