Timing of periods when on HRT

JoanThursday · 24/09/2022 10:41

I have been on HRT (patches and tablets) for about 15 months. I take 2 x tablets every night for 12 nights from the 1st of every month.

I have been under the impression that bleeding should start towards the end of the 12 days of tablets or perhaps a couple of days afterwards.

However, my period starts around a week after I've finished - about the 18th of the month (ish).

Is that right? If this is 'normal' for me, does it even matter?? It just doesn't seem to be in line with what I've read.

Thanks!

Theres Lots of different types of tablets!

Personally, I’ve never found my period matches up to when it ’should’ happen, though it has become a lot more regular.

Sorry, I meant to give more detail there. Utrogestan tablets and Evorel 75 patches.

A hopeful bump. Any other thoughts here?

Mine was 3 days after stopping but has gradually increased to 7 days this month (been taking for about 6 months)

Ah okay - my experience was very similar, @HairyKitty. Thanks!

I’m wondering why is so delayed as well, I was expecting 3 days max

I have found my tribe!! Me too! Stopped utrogestan last Thursday and still no period.

moominda · 27/09/2022 21:13

Yes me too! Exactly a week after. I wondered if it was because I was using it vaginally?

Covid seemed to lengthen my cycles even more afterwards as well as it barely being a period and I discussed going to continuous with Gp. I was taking the utrogestan on day 3 or something silly. Then my cycle completely reset so that I did get a period 7 days after starting so had a shorter cycle.

I dived into continuous as I upped patches and then ran out for a few days. Then a period has attempted on and off for over a week, this week. And it was horrible with mood and aches. V light though. So not sure what to do!

Think will carry on with continuous and if I get another breakthrough bleed without any accidental breaks will go back to sequential.

My conclusion re periods coming a week afterwards is that you're still being covered with lining thinning progesterone for a good 12 / 28 days of the cycle. It's not a natural cycle anymore. The oestrogen level is more constant whereas normal periods have a rise and fall. In a normal period the progesterone matches the rise in oestrogen. You may have a bit of your own cycle on hrt but the progesterone should cover the higher levels. (It's taken me 9 months to come to this conclusion!)

moominda · 27/09/2022 21:14

I have considered that I wasn't on enough oestrogen though.

If I'm on a higher level / my blood levels are higher perhaps a bleed comes on more quickly?

JoanThursday · 27/09/2022 21:44

Thanks so much for your responses. Not just me then!

I've googled this but can't really find anything that answers my question - but that not really surprising as far as anything to do with meno is concerned!

I'm just a bit baffled: does it matter .... or not?! 🤷‍♀️

Honestly I spent months trying to find the answer.

I don't think it does, cycle should sync but the days of the cycle you take it will be earlier than others.

I use a 28 day cycle for utrogestan; I tried a calendar month and it still came a week after stopping.

As I say I've wondered if it's because I've not previously been on enough oestrogen

Summerhillsquare · 28/09/2022 21:32

My bleeds are entirely random on HRT.

Ironically one of my perimenopause symptoms was moving to a short regular cycle after years of chaotic periods.

SophiaLarsen · 30/09/2022 21:44

Still no AF. 33 days now. Pre HRT was a 21-25 day cycle.
