I am so happy… just had some tests done and be told that I am about a year away from having finished menopause… I have pcos and no idea I was perimenopausal, so am over the moon about finally being rid of periods for good.

Ah congratulations on your forthcoming retirement from painful periods!

LisaD76 · 17/09/2022 19:57

FriedasCarLoad Thank you … people think It’s batty that I’m happy at being sterile, but I’m just bloody ecstatic, I’m 46 and suffered since 14, just glad it’s almost over before I knew it had begun (thought symptoms were because of the pcos)

What is this amazing test that can predict periods stopping?

LisaD76 · 18/09/2022 17:41

Summerhillsquare They tested my follicle stimulating hormone, my levels are quiet high which is why she said about a year… also my oestrogen levels are extremely low… it all shows that it’s almost over

I hate to pour water on this @LisaD76 but FSH tests are notoriously inaccurate. I had mine done (not for menopause but for another hormone-related issue) and it showed I was post-menopause. I knew I wasn't as I was having regular periods and continued to do so for another 18 months. I was told by my consultant that this is very common (inaccurate readings.)

Also, you will be free from periods, but many menopause symptoms start then, as menopause/loss of estrogen lasts for life. Peri-menopause is the few years while periods are dwindling away. So, nothing is 'over', it's a new stage of your life beginning. It might be great for you but a lot of women don't find that (and start using HRT if they want to.)

Fingers crossed you may feel fine :)

LisaD76 · 18/09/2022 18:26

JinglingHellsBells I take your point, but I have been having hot flushes etc since in my 20’s so wasn’t even aware they were peri menopausal flushes, same with the other symptoms of menopause, fsh is already at 22 and oestrogen is down to 348, so hopefully no more periods where I’m bleeding through everything or that are lasting ten days plus after the next year or so

@LisaD76 I hope it all goes well for you and don’t want to spoil the mood, but I was still getting periods last year when they checked my FSH and my readings were over 70 on both occasions! Im not sure what stage I’m at now, as I am on HRT, so I don’t know what’s a withdrawal bleed and what may be a period. It was only last year I started getting periods heavy enough to bleed through everything too.

LisaD76 · 18/09/2022 20:15

iamyourequal It’s the double edged sword of hrt though isn’t it, don’t take it and the sweats and mood swings can be uncontrollable, do take it and you don’t know when it’s really done, I am not allowed hrt so I suppose I will be able to come back in a year or so and let you know if mine stopped or not… although I’m almost 50 days late on what was usually a 25 day cycle, so I have my fingers crossed, of course I’m a woman so it’s probably not going to be that easy just to annoy (although my great grandmother had everything stop dead at 32… lucky cow)

I suffer for other reasons with my periods. They've affected my whole life very much for the worse.

I'm 44 now and wish this was my stealth boast!

RagingWoke · 18/09/2022 20:51

Fellow PCOS sufferer and I'm very jealous! Congratulations, I hope it's accurate for you!

I'm convinced I'm peri menopausal, early(ish) 30a but no idea wha the hereditary side is as DMs cycle just stopped one day with no symptoms and put down to stress (extreme stress and I'd take periods over what she dealt with), DGM had a hysterectomy early 30s. GreatDGM would never discuss something so vulgar... I'd love to be free of periods though, the bleeding through everything every hour, debilitating cramps, sweats, the beard 😵
