Taking oestrogen gel through airport security

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 17/09/2022 10:12

I've recently starting taking HRT via oestrogen gel and progesterone tablets.

I'm due to fly to Greece next weekend, but as I'm new to all this, I wondered if anyone could advise me on taking the gel (Oestrogen) through airport security? The bottle is 80 grams so I'm hoping it will be OK but should I get a letter from my GP as well to be on the safe side?

Thanks for any advice/experience.

I’ve taken oestrogel through airport security a few times and have never had a problem. I just put it in a see through bag with other toiletries. Never been stopped or asked about it. I do have the nhs app in my phone which shows it is on my repeat prescriptions list.

It's always a good idea to take official authorisation when you take any prescribed medication abroad. Do you have a prescription refill reminder-they usually come with the prescription? I always took my husband's, as he was on about 8 different medicines.

Never had an issue either.

They won’t give it a second glance.

@sueelleker I don't have a repeat prescription reminder yet as still on my first one (for 3 months) so I will call surgery on Tuesday morning and ask if I need a letter as well.

And just chuck it in the see-through plastic bag with everything else.

Thanks everyone for your advice!

I took mine through this summer with no issue. Just put it in the see through bag as usual.

I took some last week in a plastic bag with my toiletries. I then had to downsize as I hadn't realised there was a maximum plastic bag size and the security bloke exempted it as a prescription med after I'd shown him the repeat script on my phone. So if you have plenty of room then it should be fine but if not you might need a letter

I’ve been stopped a few times with mine. Make sure it’s in the box with your name on. I’ve had it checked against my passport.

I put mine in a clear bag in its box and with a copy of the prescription. Separate from my liquids bag.

not a problem at either Gatwick or the Greek side.

Took my 80g bottle through this summer. The member of staff at security thought it was too big to go through - as soon as I pointed out it was only 80g he was fine with it and let it go through.

Cismyfatarse · 18/09/2022 13:29

I took mine to Greece. In the box with my name on it ftom the pharmacy, with the prescription and the name had to match the passport. No issue at all.

oreosoreosoreos · 18/09/2022 13:29

I flew last year with it, (put medication in separate clear bag as I didn’t have room in my other), and went through security with no trouble (Stanstead).

Flew this year (Bristol) and I had to wait for security, and was then asked for my passport and prescription to match them up. No drama though, they just wanted to check it out.

no issues coming back either, from Spain or Sweden.

Slightly concerned as I’ll be flying to Dubai next year, but research says I should be fine as long as I have the prescription!

EthicalNonMahogany · 18/09/2022 13:43

queue guard at Hrow told me the other day to make sure and take it in the box with the pharmacy label on.

Carlycat · 18/09/2022 13:44

I take mine in the original box with my prescription details on. Same with my testosterone gel. Both in individual clear bags

BatshitCrazyWoman · 24/09/2022 04:32

I've just come back from a trip. My Oestrogel was taken 'to be tested' at Heathrow T5 security. It passed (I think they use litmus paper to test it). Thank goodness. Apparently the scanning 'computer' highlights items to be tested, so they have to do this. It's happened to me before with a hair product, which was taken off me and destroyed. But I've never spoken to anyone else it's happened to!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 24/09/2022 04:34

Oh and mine was in its box (as it had the pharmacy label on it), and he said it would be better if it hadn't been in the box! I also took a copy of my prescription (hopefully meaning I would have been able to get some in Sweden while I was away if security had taken it off me 🫤)
