Suddenly gained weight in short time

I guess I just entered Peri menopause.
I am 48 years ( 49 in December)
My period were always very on time every 28 days but last few months changed shorter and also missed a month or became irregular.
Now I noticed and people around me too that I suddenly put on weight too much!
Like almost a stone in a 4 weeks !
My bum is big and wobbly, also have tyre around my waist, knickers cutting into my arse, huge wide hips suddenly .
I always was size 12 or 10 on the top but not anymore.
I usually was always very fit and mobile, spent last 7 years walking daily about 4-5 miles to school and back with my daughter, this now stopped as she left the school.
Also I feel sweaty lately - started in last few weeks, no hot flashes but just feel hot, but I thought nothing of it as it was a hot weather anyway.
Is this all normal in regards of peri menopause symptoms or do I need to see GP ?
I read somewhere that sudden weight gain could be sign of thyroid issues so I thought I would ask here first. Thank you

The weight gain is likely due to you no longer walking 5 miles a day - you will need to either drastically cut back on calories (around 500 kcal per day!) or start exercising again.

The other symptoms are classic menopause.

Its worth getting bloods done to check thyroid etc, at you age you would be considered peri menopausal and this stage can cause weight gain/changes to body shape but you need to know if thats the only factor. Obviously if you ve gone from walking 4+ miles a day to none that is going to play into it too.

maranella · 25/08/2022 09:16

Agree on the advice advice above - you need to start walking again. Maybe get a dog, if you can't face just walking aimlessly for 5 miles each day.

Panickingnow · 25/08/2022 09:26

Yes I hope to do some walking again.
I am quite short so any weigh gain on me shows immediately.
In regards of what I eat, I eat the same as before ,hence I was shocked why I suddenly put on so quickly.

Yes but think of the amount of calories you would burn off walking 4 miles a day. If you are consuming the same number of calories and not doing those miles logically those calories are going to be building uo on/in your body. Peri menopause will play into that too, it seems to be harder to shift weight and fat tends to build up around the tummy.
Aside from the weight walking is a great weight bearing excercise that is very important for bone density which can be effected by loss of oestrogen which can lead to osteoporosis.

I think you are peri and the weight gain has been accelerated by dropping your big daily walk. I had similar, I went from 2 to 5 day a week desk job and put on over a stone quickly. I thought it was just the sedentary job but now look back and see other peri symptoms started then and lots of the weight is around my middle. Still battling to shift it!

samthebordercollie · 25/08/2022 20:59

I doubt it's the lack of walking. Unless you were walking at over 6km an hour walking burns very few calories. Cut out products made from refined flour, eat more fibre, no processed or fast food, no sugar and you'll be fine. But start the walking again because you need to keep active for physical and mental health.

Nobody puts on 14 lbs in 4 weeks due to not walking an ordinary school run ... leaving aside that there is no reason OP wouldn't have gained that every summer while her DD was on school hols, lack of walking was the only cause.

14 lbs over 28 days = 49k excess calories, or 1750 excess/day. Some parts of this story don't make sense.

lljkk · 25/08/2022 21:11

weird things that MN formatting does.... I wrote 14 lbs

Panickingnow · 26/08/2022 08:54

@lljkk well it does not make sense, hence I’m asking here.
It is mostly my hips and my bum, it’s just ballooned into widest.
My face, hands, legs look ok.
I do eat some donuts every few days but I always ate these even before and some days I’m so busy I fail to eat any lunch..

I dont think its just the lack of excercise, but going from 4 miles a day to nothing wont help. Presumably you have had other summers not walking and and this didnt happen (unless DD just started school?) peri menopause it self will cause weight gain and it will cause fat to build up around the tummy area in particular.
If you google Loiuse newson menopause and weight theres a goid booklet on changing body shape in menopause that explains how/why it hapoens

Panickingnow · 26/08/2022 18:32

@MILLYmo0se yes I believe peri just started properly, my periods are all over the place..
In last years summers, I didn’t walk either and no dramatic weigh gain at all, so I believe it’s because the Peri this year starting and also the chocolate donuts..

Go get checked- to rule out fluid build up in abdominal cavity.

dingbat56 · 21/09/2022 09:47

OP .. your situation sounds very similar to my own .. I’m definitely peri and my kids moved to secondary so no more daily walk .. I’m now 10 pounds heavier in quite a short time .. I do run - used to be about 15km a week which also I’m struggling with .. I’m struggling with sleep and that doesn’t help .

definitely though go see your Dr to discount other issues
