Hello, I hope someone can offer me some advice please.

I am 50. I'm not exactly sure if I am peri or menopausal but periods starting getting irregular a few years ago and they are now very infrequent.

My main symptom that I am struggling with is anxiety which has been bloody awful. I've always been a worrier anyway but the last few years, anxiety has taken hold to the point that I'm very rarely completely relaxed (exacerbated by the stress of my teen autistic daughter).

Some days I don't recognise myself - I get angry or tearful over minor things, or sometimes I just feel numb. I don't like this at all - I have always enjoyed life but don't feel like I am at the moment.

I've had some hot flushes too.

From what I understand, most GPs are pretty clueless about menopause. A friend has given me details of a private specialist who seems very good so she might be a good place to start.

I have never been on regular medication before and even the thought of trying different things, they might not work, give me side effects etc makes me feel anxious!

I hope someone can relate to this. Thanks.

I suffer from anxiety and it's horrible.
I was prescribed citalapram a few years ago and it helps so much.
I'm on a small dose - 20mg so it is probably more phycosamatic by now but I don't care!

It's worth talking to your GP rather than going to another specialist. GPs have improved and quite a few so take menopause/HRT seriously. If they don't listen you can explore other options.
