Anyone on continuous Provera

I know that Utrogestan is the gold standard progesterone component of HRT, but it’s not controlling bleeding for me. I don’t fancy a Mirena coil. So when I have a review with my GP next week I’m going to ask about Provera instead. It’s been great for stopping bleeding for a recent holiday albeit at a higher dose than would be given long term.

I don't know why utrogestan is deemed the gold standard progesterone. I found it absolutely useless at controlling my HRT bleeding.

Definitely ask for provera. It's meant to be good.

I had a coil fitted and that's put a stop to all bleeding thankfully.

Yes I think the Mirena coil would also be something to consider. I’ve been on Utrogestan now for over two years and it’s never controlled bleeding. I’ve been on a continuous regime all that time, one capsule daily, two capsules daily, tried it orally and vaginally, but nothing helps stop the frequent bleeding. I’d rather have Provera than a coil but not sure if GP will agree; I think there’s an increased breast cancer risk with synthetic progesterone.

It's your decision ultimately, but I think provera may be quite heavy duty ( so it would probably work effectively!) Whereas the Mirena releases a small amount of progesterone, locally over 24 hours.

See what your GP says. There is norethisterone too, which might do the trick.

Best of luck.

Provera is also listed as a suggested progesterone on the BMS website, so the GP should consider it as an option for you.

Thanks for that,Runaround, especially about the BMS listing. That’s very helpful.

Did you try it and did it work?! I'm getting desperate to stop the bleeding. I have been prescribed 2.5 mg and still bleeding! Thank you.

Pandorapitstop · 31/12/2022 18:29

Yes I’m on Provera 10mg daily. Started it around four months ago and I’ve had no further bleeding at all.

good morning all.
Does anyone take the estrogel plus Provera in continuous format?
if so what does of Provera do you take ?
My Gp and Pharmacisit seem to thing 5mg daily is the amount regardless if you take 1 pump or 4 pumps of estrogel …

thx
