Could menopause cause these symptoms? Anyone had mood swings from high to low?

Hi I went to the doctors today but really didn't get anywhere. My last period was in November and the main problem I have been having is some hot flushes at night along with disturbed nights. I have been taking sage tablets and cut out all alcohol and vastly reduced caffeine. This has helped with the flushes but my moods are very strange. I've found sleep disturbance creates a manic type episode where I feel amazing and have tons of energy and don't feel that tired. However it doesn't last forever and now after about 3 weeks of feeling hyper I almost collapsed from exhaustion and slept really well. Now feel tearful and really tired. The doctor just thinks my moods are because of lack of sleep. I just feel really confused, not sure if it's hormonal? Anyone had similar?

Just want to add that I exercise every day, am normal bmi, and had full blood tests done all normal so nothing physically wrong like thyroid etc. On no medication other than taking drowsy cough mixture to help me sleep. The time I tried without it I hardly slept and felt even more manic.

How old are you op? Can you try a different Gp? Have you looked taking different supplements?

I'm 52. Not tried any supplements other than multi vitamins and sage. Not had any typical menopause symptoms other than poor sleep and a few hot flushes. Is there anything you recommend?

My PMT went manic, my mood swung from high to low and back again on a daily basis. I had a Mirena coil put in for heavy bleeding and happened to notice that my mood has massively improved since I had it put in. I’m not taking oestrogen.

Thanks @KangarooKenny I had something similar when I was 18 but it was a fortnight of high followed by a fortnight of low and had heavy periods. The extreme mood swings instantly stopped as soon as I went on the pill. I have booked another GP appointment with a female doctor this time.

I mean, lack of sleep will always make you a little moody! But it's wrong of your doctor to dismiss you like that without even taking the menopause into consideration given your menstrual history. Dropping hormone levels that are found at perimenopause and menopause are absolutely linked to emotions and mood changes and I would absolutely get that second opinion (guessing the first doctor was male?!)
