Can’t cope with itching from patches anymore!

I’ve taken the last one off and not replaced it. I’m 57, four years since I had my last period. Will I get hot flushes again? I was planning on staying on them forever, but just can’t stand it.

I’ve tried the oestrogen gel and utrogestan capsules before, I used them vaginally and had horrendously painful breasts.

I didn’t feel the patches (Evorel Conti) were doing anything apart from stopping the hot flushes, I was tired and achy still, forgetful and depressed and anxious. Who knows if that was all due to the menopause?!

Can someone tell me what my alternatives are? I get migraines occasionally, so would rather not take tablets.

I have had a mirena coil before, as contraception, the insertion was so painful I fainted and it took them a long time to manage it. So I’d rather not have another, but realise I’m running out of choices. I’m tempted to ask them to remove my womb and not have that problem anymore! But doubt they would.

Oral hormone meds have much higher side-effect profiles. I would ask for the gel. There are different strengths available. The breast tenderness does settle with time. It is usually a result of the initial rise in hormone levels, so as your hormones will have lifted anyway, it might not happen this time. (Also, a lot of women report that decreasing sugar and caffeine intake a little may help while they are settling in too, but I’d be stabby if I gave up my coffee)

I don’t have any caffeine, but don’t take my sugar away!!!

Just thought I’d update. I’ve been putting the Betnovate scallop solution on before applying the patch and no itching! However, I have spoken to my gp and she recommended another patch to try, I think it began with an F, collecting from the chemist tomorrow.

It's the adhesive that you're reacting to so I'm unsure why she/he thinks another patch will be any different. Glad the Betnovate works!! It's essential for me now

Imherenowandthen · 02/05/2022 20:25

I read online that different companies use different adhesive, so maybe that’s why. Also the patch she’s prescribed is smaller I think.

@Imherenowandthen , can you let us know how you get on please? I’m allergic to Evorel patches so swapped to the gel and utrogestan. Now can’t get hold of the gel of course, so will be interested to see if you don’t have an allergic reaction to the new patches, because it might be worth me trying them.

Imherenowandthen · 02/05/2022 23:58

Of course, I’ll update soon.

hi OP. i was using evorel conti patches for about 3 months when i developed an allergic reaction to the adhesive, the patch marks would stay for weeks after they had been removed and i had hives come up elsewhere around my body. all other symptoms had subsided using evorel so i was reluctant to change, but i switched over to fem7 and they have been great. i don’t use any gels at the moment. hope the change makes a difference
