Will Utrogestan stop my endless period? Resetting HRT

GlitterBiscuits · 15/03/2022 22:25

I'm usually on HRT but I had Covid and was was floored by it,so I lost track.
Abnormally. I use oestrogel and 12 days of Utrogestan.

I got my period without taking Utrogestan but it hasn't really stopped for 2 weeks. Presumably because I had more lining to shed. Or maybe Covid just spoiled things?
If I start Utrogestan now will it stop my period so I can re-set my HRT.?

Anyone with any thoughts?
I tried Fortress GP this morning but couldn't even get them to pick up phone!

Phoned GP at 8.00 on the dot. Engaged the first few times.
When I got through I was caller number 10! Hooray, this a low number .

But when I got through to a human being, no more slots left this morning and this is just for a callback. That's all they offer.

I had similar - on Evorel patches and Ultrogestan - and came off for about 6 months during the early days of the pandemic as I was too busy to organise a repeat prescription. I then had a fourteen day period, it stopped for two days, and I then had another one for nine. Wasn’t sure if it was my Covid jab as I’d just had my first one. It did calm down significantly over the next few months once I started the Ultrogestan.

What do you mean by 'Abnormally'?
Do you mean that you lost track of using utrogestan? Or you stopped your HRT altogether?

Can't really help unless you are more specific :)

Sorry @JinglingHellsBells it should have read

Normally I use Oestrogel and Utrogestan and Vagifem ( and I bloody love them!)

But I barely kept up with the gel when ill.

I'd appreciate any of your guru like advice please.
I'm buying ferrous sulphate tablets so I don't bleed to death!

@ShavingTheBadger - that makes me feel a bit better.

My GP surgery used to be so good, they won awards!
I'm sure the phone triage system saves some time but not if you can't even get through!

I suspect you are having a normal period and it's not connected to using or not your HRT.

If your periods are more or less regular, you could wait till the bleeding has stopped and start Utrogestan mid-cycle OR start it any day now and stick to that day each month (eg the 15th.)

I don't think it will stop the bleeding now as that's not how it works. It works by preventing the lining building up when used alongside estrogen.

You could try OTC Tranexamic acid to slow the bleeding or plain old ibuprofen, taken every 4 hrs as per directions.

Thanks Jingle.

I thought progesterone was what you got prescribed stop a period?

I suppose at my age it's not impossible to have a three week long period at my age but oh my word, it's wearing!

Tranexamic acid hasn't helped it stop. I've had Naproxen which is similar to ibuprofen.

I need a crystal ball to see when it will end!

My understanding (!?) is that using something like Norethisterone (it's a synthetic progestogen found in most combined hrt tablets and patches, or as a separate item) can lengthen the progesterone phase of a cycle and therefore delay a period. This is what women (not on HRT) use to delay a period if they have an event where they don't want a period at the same time.

Utrogestan is a much weaker type of progesterone compared to Norethisterone (I used to use it along with Oestrogel).

If you use Utrogestan now, it's a bit like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted. You could ask your dr to prescribe 10 days of Norethisterone which may stop the bleeding.

Then revert to the usual gel/ Utro in the way you did use it.
