Supplements post menopause?

What supplements do you all take for menopause? What are they for and do they make a big difference to your well-being? I’m only on magnesium and some mushroom extract supplements at the moment (in addition to my HRT) and I’m wondering if there’s other things I should be taking for things like bone health, mood, brain function etc?

Everyone is supposed to take Vit D from October to April.

Nothing else is necessary unless you have a limited diet where you are missing out on major food groups that leave you short of calcium, iron, Vit Bs, etc.

@JinglingHellsBells thank you, I do take vitamin D, forgot to mention it in my post. I have a good healthy balanced diet … now (didn’t before) so I’m probably doing everything right. I’ve even started doing more load-bearing exercise (and I hate exercise!) to help keep my bones strong. I do worry though as I spent years on the wrong diet and the wrong HRT and I have no idea if my bones are ok. I am still struggling with my health in other regards but I’m not sure I will ever be 100% well as I have a very compromised immune system.

I take Centrum 50+ Vitamin Tablets for Women. I do feel a lot better although I also changed my exercise regime as well so hard to say which one had the effect.

I started with the ordinary Wellwoman but soon after had some post menopausal bleeding. Likely a coincidence but it does contain EPO which can apparently have an ostroegenic effect. Will stick to the one for oldies from now on just in case!

I take Complete Woman from Boots which has everything. Saves me thinking. I find it has helped me. One tablet a day or whenever l remember.

@HPFA may I ask what your exercise regime entails? Are there any forms of exercise you do specifically for menopause?

@Pegs11

I have a subscription to Team Body Project (link below) - it's about £90 per year but their free membership offer is also quite good and gives you the chance to work out if it's for you. They don't put any pressure on you to upgrade.

I usually do two days of cardio combined with either Pilates/Ballet then one day of resistance with light weights. I only use 1 kg but it's been enough to ease my shoulder pain. I have to be careful with my knees - no jump squats - and I'm cautious with lunges and standing squats. I've been surprised how many little aches and pains that I assumed were inevitable with age have eased - and I can now look at my stomach without cringing.

I don't know if any of this relates specifically to menopause but I am disciplined about listening to my body - if something doesn't feel right I'll either stop altogether or substitute another exercise immediately. Over time you realise where it's OK to push yourself and where you need to accept your body's limits.

Good luck!

@HPFA thanks so much for replying, and sorry it’s taken me so long to acknowledge your reply! This is really useful info. I can’t ever see myself doing cardio to be honest, I just hate it, but I have started doing squats and using arm weights…. And maybe I could start running up and the stairs every now and then. It’s a start anyway!

I take a Lambert's vitamin for the over 50s, plus vitamin D, which I take all year round as I would forget otherwise! I also take a supplement for my hair (protein, basically). Plus HRT 🙂
