Contraception at 49?

I have had a mirena coil removed this week as it had been in for over 6 years, and I was having a gynae procedure.
I am still having very light periods, approx every 3 months. I will be 50 in 8 months time. Do i need to start using contraception?

I'm 50. I had to stop the depo jabs this year as it's not recommended for over 50s. The practice nurse said contraception till 55!!! I'm on the mini pill now and it's been fine. Think they can do hormone tests to check too.

I read online it said contraception until 55 or 12 months after no periods. 55!! Surely I won't get pregnant at 49?

It's one year with no periods of you are over 50, and two years if under 50.

Yes, conceptions are rare once in your 50s, but they can and do happen. You can decide to follow the advice or not, but if you don't then you need to realise that you have chosen to risk a pregnancy. If it was you, how do you think you'd cope?
