Perimenopause, long period, is this common?

I am 49 and in the throes of what I think is perimenopause. My periods have always been 5 days with a normal flow. Now they have shortened to 23 days, super heavy and this cycle I have been spotting since day 5 of my period and now I am into day 10.it is mostly when I wipe but won’t seem to let up.
Is this a normal occurrence that anyone else has e experienced?

Yes, I was like this, then I stopped for three months completely and then returned. My last period lasted just under a month with just 4 days off in the middle. the final week I was like a river for a couple of days. I have been prescribed Progesterone for three months to help with it.

MrsFin · 23/07/2021 13:27

Yep. Normal to have long periods, short periods, no periods, constant periods.
All in the same month sometimes Grin

Katshouldnotswim · 23/07/2021 15:21

This is my experience too.

53 and counting down the months

I’m currently experiencing the same as you. My problem seems to be when I’m sleeping nothing comes out and I stand up and whoosh. It’s horrible.

During the day it seems to come out mainly when I go to the bathroom. Why is this?

I previously hadn’t had a period for 3 months. It’s a horrible prospect that this is going to continue for a while.

njshep · 24/07/2021 13:17

Yes, Similar experience DixiePeach. I had a normal.... yet heavy period that lasted 5 days and have spent the last 7 days spotting. Mostly only when I go to the bathroom.
Not a regular flow at all but weird. Now I think I am ovulating and spitting at the same time.
I had an ultrasound this time last year and all was fine. If this is just the normal menopausal experience than I can deal but it’s a bit distressing when things start to go wonky!

I realised I'd started at work when I pulled a tampon out in the toilet when I was having, I thought, my usual monthly period.
I pulled out the tampon, and so much blood came out with it, it was all over me and the floor Blush.
I called a female colleague, who came with a coat for me to put on and I left and went straight home.
(I did clean up the toilet as best I could, but she called a cleaner).
Collage was very discreet, but the whole experience was awful.

lollipoprainbow · 24/07/2021 21:32

I have just finished a period but now bright red blood when I went to the loo just now so looks like another one starting, I've also been shattered the last few days. I have health anxiety so scared it's not the perimenopause. I'm 47.

njshep · 25/07/2021 13:47

It sounds as though any version of unusual can be party of the perimenopause experience. I am still barely there spotting and it’s day 12.....

I put a similar post up here which didn’t get replies. I had a withdrawal bleed from utro- it was perfectly normal except I started producing brown gunk for nearly 2 weeks . Now back on the utro. It will be interesting to see what the bleed is like this time. It felt like either my body was being very slow to clear stuff out or there was left over lining that wasn’t cleared from the previous month( that bleed suddenly stopped dead after a day).
It’s all so worrying isn’t it.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 28/07/2021 08:10

So glad I've seen this post , I've just turned 46 but having hot flushes , aches and pains for over a year. This month I've been crampy but no bleeding - it's really bizarre! Sore boobs too .
( deffo not pg but feels a bit like it)

Just popped on here to say don't leave heavy periods- I did and had anaemia and blood transfusions. Get a blood test and some help towards a solution.

themuttsnutts · 19/08/2021 23:23

Yes. I am getting this too

HoobleDooble · 22/08/2021 19:29

I'm 48 and for the past few years have developed a long run up of brown blood for a few days, then a couple of hellishly heavy, Lillet Ultra plus a nighttime towel only lasting a few hours, days, followed by a game of on and off for a further 4-5 days. I'm currently 2 weeks late for the first after being more or less 28 days bang on for years, and hoping this could be the beginning of the end. Also itchy and bitchy on an extreme level.

Mocha22 · 18/03/2022 11:11

Hi,
Please let me know how did you get on though I am aware it has been a while. I am having exactly the same problem. I am 49. I have been very concerned. Thanks

Girkkuli · 18/03/2022 16:24

I am 46 and the only peri symptoms I had were spotting up to a week before periods and heavy two day periods. I stopped drinking and my periods have returned to normal?!

TheFnozwhowasmirage · 18/03/2022 20:01

Yes,I've had this too. 53 and my periods stopped for 3 months last year, then started up again with a vengeance. Last month I had a period, then a week with nothing, then 10 days of spotting, followed by another period. I had a phone appointment with a GP who said that it's normal, but the gaps between periods should start getting longer.🙄 Great, along with the awful anxiety, irritability and constantly feeling hot,I've just about had enough.

Dawn1331 · 30/10/2022 06:55

So relieved to read your post!!! I'm the same - only 45 though but identical symptoms x

KangarooKenny · 30/10/2022 07:28

Yep, I had a Mirena coil to stop it, but I do have a light period with it. No spotting though.

Dartsplayer · 30/10/2022 08:04

Yes I'm 51 and my last 2 periods have been 20 days each with the last few days being just when I wipe. I spoke to the doctor and we worked out dates and she said mine are getting longer apart but when the hormones are starting to decrease your body doesn't realise when it has to stop. I use the Balance app on my phone to keep track of my periods and other symptoms

Dawn1331 · 30/10/2022 09:15

I'm the same!!! Health anxiety has just stilted my life. I'm 45 and have been in perimenopause for at least a year but only recently had a late small period then blood when I wipe. Why are we all so in the dark about it all - I wish I knew more before it was already here x 😓
