Mirena + Oestrogel- breast cancer risk?

I have had a Mirena for ages for period related reasons and I love it.

Recently I went on Oestrogel for peri reasons.

Today I read (on an American website) that taking progesterone and oestrogen raises your breast cancer risk by a whopping 75pc. Can that be right??

I'm feeling a bit panicked and wondering if I should stop the Oestrogel.

Obviously I shall speak to my doctor but I'd be really interested to know other people's thoughts on this before I do.

This might help:

Basically there is a small increase in breast cancer risk (comparable to having 2 units of alcohol per night), but a decline in other conditions including osteoporosis etc.

I think what you're reading may relate to the Women's Health Initiative study which had some fairly major flaws. You might find the Davina McCall programme Sex, Myths and the Menopause useful in shedding light on what is a complex subject.

Was about to recommend watching the Davina documentary. The increase is tiny and far less than the increased risk from being overweight, drinking alcohol etc so as to be negligible. The studies that were cited for those statistics were later shown to be flawed.

If you have a womb then you have to take progesterone with oestrogen. Taking oestrogen as a gel is one of the safest ways and the breast cancer risk is very, very small. You're on the gold standard of HRT.

Thanks so much @UnaOfStormhold and others, that's really helpful.

I did watch the Davina thing and thought it was basically ok, but have been wondering if I rushed into things....
