When Do the Menopause Symptoms End?

Hi. I'm 51 and I think my peri menopause symptoms started in my mid 40s.

I've been on HRT for about 4 months. The hot flushes have stopped but I still get anxiety and tearful days. I sometimes feel really low and don't feel like myself.

My GP doesn't want to increase my HRT dose. Is there any light at the end of the tunnel? Will the symptoms finally go away? Thanks

My experience (I had a surgical meno several years ago so total overnight menopause and no option of HRT for me) is that the symptoms haven't gone away but they've got further and further apart - I used to get several hot flushes a day, now it's down to one every couple of weeks. Anxiety has got milder - the cycle of severe anxiety has become a bigger 'wheel' if that makes sense.

@msmenopause Maybe ask your GP why they won't increase your dose? The point of HRT is to relieve symptoms. There is no 'gain' by using a low dose when something slightly higher might help. There is no evidence that using a slightly higher dose of estrogen causes more side effects, so it really doesn't stack up they are denying you a change in dose.

Does your GP know much about hrt?

The medical advice is to try a type and dose for 3 months. If that isn't working the advice is ) increase the dose (or reduce) and/ or b) change to another type.

What are you using and what dose?

I'm on Estradiol 50 microgram patches and oestrogen tablets. I think my GP said that the dose can't be increased as I am on other medication.

Do you mean Utrogestan tablets? (that's micronised progesterone.)

I think you should query your dr on it (or see another GP who may be more helpful.) I'd be very surprised if there are other medications that interact with a higher dose of estrogen- it's certainly not online or on the patient info for HRT.

What are you taking as other meds.

My specialist does not want to increase my estrogen patch from 75mg as that would involve me needing more progesterone. I'm on the lowest dose of Ultrogestan at 200mg per night for 10 days, I hate it, it makes me depressed, anxious, exhausted, paranoid and I totally lose my appetite. We are now going to add testosterone in to the mix. I just wish I didn't need progesterone, monitor your worst days @msmenopause, you might find that you're progesterone intolerant too.
